The New York Times releases a new audio app

• The New York Times Audio app has been released to beta testers. Here’s a little look from Alex Rainert, the NYT’s Head of Audio Product & Design. Sara Fischer at Axios has access and posts a detailed look - it contains other audio features in addition to podcasts.

• Ian Urbina, a journalist, has been accused of operating a scam by musician Benn Jordan. Urbina is claimed to be collecting royalties for more than 400 artists, for music he didn’t write, using a distribution company that, it appears, he owns. Urbina has partially apologised in three parts, and a fact check questions some of the claims made.

• Fireside Chat is sending out personal “time limited” invitations - telling us we have a “unique voice that would benefit from being on the Fireside platform”. With “lots of interest from the podcast community”, “we have limited creator spots left”, says co-founder Falon Fatemi, urging us to get in touch at our “earliest convenience”. A look into a friendly podcast producer’s email inbox leads us to pontificate that the invitations might not be as unique nor “time limited” as we’d hoped; she’s been sending these emails since October.

• Fly Delta? You’ll get free Spotify access on Viasat-equipped aircraft from now until Jan 19, including to podcasts - no need to pay for the wifi access. Go podcasting!

• The Quill team have put together a list of 30 brands that made the biggest impact on the podcast industry throughout 2021. The article says these brands are “in no particular order”, which is a shame for whoever’s #1.

• Auddia’s Vodacast app has announced a partnership with the Bleav Podcasting Network. Bleav will create digital feed content for the app, which offers a more interactive experience.

• Targetspot has launched Passport Audio Manager in beta, a platform allowing self-service access for small and medium businesses to manage digital audio campaigns.

• Ian Walker is to join SCA’s LiSTNR Original Podcasts team. He was at the ABC, responsible for a number of award-winning podcasts.
