Kiernan Shipka to appear in feature-length scripted podcast

• Kiernan Shipka is the latest Hollywood star to appear in a scripted podcast. She will star in Treat, being produced by Audacy’s C13Features, in the first feature-length project from the company, touted as “movies for your ears”.

• Evo Terra has published his Podcast App Manifesto - four things he would like to see in any podcast app. He spoke about them this week in Podland, where he was a guest.

• Podcasting is “an ideal tool to inject false or misleading information into mainstream discourse while going undetected”, according to research from Valerie Wirtschafter at The Brookings Institution. 10% of all podcasts contain misinformation, she says, adding that open RSS feeds are a “significant hurdle for content moderation”. “Addressing the moderation of misleading material”, she adds, “requires a fundamental rethinking of the broader podcast infrastructure.”

• Audioship is a new product that claims it is the “easiest way to upload your audio to YouTube”.

• CNN Audio has unveiled their Q3/21 podcast slate. Clarissa Ward is to host a new podcast ‘Tug Of War’.

• Audio Drama Day will return to the London Podcast Festival on Sept 5. Dirk Maggs will close the festival in a special live interview with audio drama expert Ella Watts.

• Cuban podcast platform CubaPod is to close due to lack of funding and faster than expected growth. “My recommendation for other entrepreneurs is: don’t start a project without a business model,” said co-founder and CEO Carlos Lugones.

• One of China’s biggest audio platforms, Dragonfly FM has been ordered to be removed from app stores by the Chinese government, for using too many pop-up notifications and for asking for excessive device permissions.

• Marie Joyce has joined Australian womens media brand Mamamia as Head of Audio Sales, Victoria.

• Apple announced changes coming to the App Store that, pending court approval, will resolve a class-action suit from US developers. There is some clarification on non-app payment methods, which may be relevant for third-party podcast subscription services and apps.

• Anyone can learn to do their own PR. Paul Blanchard has a book - Fast PR - which promises advice and insight from a variety of big companies. Paul’s a personal supporter of Podnews; we saw this in a tweet, though (and he bought us a coffee once in The Before Time).
