Google adds podcast results within main desktop search

Google appears to have rolled-out podcast results in their main desktop search, complete with a link to the play buttons. Spotted by Bababam Audio’s Pierre Orlac’h, we’ve been able to replicate this from Canadian, Australian and Swedish IP addresses. Steven Goldstein showed Podnews that it also works from iPhones (and plays the audio within Google’s web player). The play buttons aren’t appearing in searches from the UK, though - an attempt by Google to placate the BBC?
- These plays may not be credited in your podcast host’s statistics as being from Google Podcasts, since they’re browser based, so simply looking at the user-agent won’t help. In our tests, the referrer from these plays is set as
https://podcasts.google.com/
. Worthwhile clarifying with your podcast host that they’ll attribute these to Google Podcasts. - Two years ago, it was estimated that Google handles 63,000 searches per second. If you’d like to see the search results for yourself, try a search for “podnews podcast”.

New podcast host RedCircle has launched tipping. The new feature, for which RedCircle charges an “industry-leading” 4.5%, only works from the company’s web player - they tell Podnews they will also support the standard donation link for podcast apps like Overcast or others that support it.

Megafono, the Brazilian podcast host, has added support for WebSub, so podcasters using the platform should appear instantly in supporting podcast apps, like Google Podcasts.
