Dutch podcast network hits a million downloads a month; and Apple Podcasts gets a redesign

  • In an interesting blog post, UX designer Henry Cheng interviews users of the Apple Podcasts app, and redesigns it to make it better. Of particular interest: in his mockup, “search” returns not just that person’s podcast, but other podcasts they’ve appeared on. This is nice.

  • The Netherlands: Dag en Nacht, a Dutch podcast network, is celebrating after hitting over a million podcast downloads in July. They publish more than twenty shows, and started the company in April 2017. (Context: only 23m people in the world speak Dutch).

  • HowStuffWorks has signed a deal with DAX in the UK for ad representation. DAX is owned and operated by Global, the UK media and entertainment group.

  • The South China Post highlights podcasting in China and Los Angeles from a gender equality viewpoint. Interesting point: “Because podcasts can be downloaded from so many different sources, they are more difficult for the government to censor.”

  • Audioboom has a new non-exec Chairman: Michael Tobin is on multiple tech boards, and was CEO of Telecity, a datacentre and co-location company. Audioboom claims to host over 14,000 content channels.

  • Congratulations and happy one-year anniversary to Everyone Loves Guitar. In their first year, they’ve produced 310 episodes (each around 90 minutes long), featuring full-length interviews with professional guitar players. “These are 'life stories’ which revolve around the personal story of the guest. The emphasis is on how they became successful, work ethic, how to get things done, and how to overcome challenges,” says host Craig Garber.

  • The September listening list for Podcast Brunch Club - like a book club, but for podcasts - is ocean conservation. There are two new chapters of the group: one in Sydney NSW, Australia, and one in Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • In Australia, a confronting opinion piece is posted on the ABC’s website, from the host of Silent Waves (Nearly Media / Omny Studio)
