The annual Finnish podcast survey has been published by Norstat for Podimo. The study shows an appetite for more erotic content, and one of the top three specific places to listen to podcasts was the sauna. Apart from confirming the stereotypes, 62% of podcast listeners said they would be willing to pay for them, a figure which has increased from 49% last year.

Podimo has just announced that it has raised €44mn (US $48mn) in funding. Morten Strunge, the CEO, says it will allow the company, which offers subscriptions to a premium podcast platform, to continue growth while orienting it towards profitability.

Podcast and audiobook subscription service Podimo has released Podimo Reflect, a look back for subscribers to see what they listened to in 2023. Insights include a decline in popularity from true crime in Finland and Norway, growth in news and politics for listeners in Spain and the Netherlands, and a feast of filth for naughty Germans.

Danish premium podcast company Podimo released a financial report for 2022. Revenue tripled from DKK 45mn (US$6.7mn) in 2021 to DKK 152mn (US$33.7mn) in 2022; but the company's losses also tripled, to DKK 328mn (US$49mn). Talking about the deficit, CEO Morten Strunge is quoted as saying “When we enter a new market, we must have a minimum catalog of content from day one. After all, you can't just launch a subscription service with one podcast."

A study by the Observatorio Nebrija del Español at Nebrija University in Madrid examined 263 original podcasts published last year by Amazon Music, Audible, Cuonda, iVoox, Podimo, Podium Podcast, Sonora and Spotify. The study discovered that 68% of original podcasts from these companies were only available with a paid subscription. Sonora led Spanish podcast production in 2022, with 84 original podcasts.

Data: In Finland, a study says that podcast listening takes time away from traditional media like radio and television. The data from Norstat is released today by Podimo, which claims a 40% growth in subscribers since the beginning of the year.

In the Netherlands, Podimo is celebrating its one-year anniversary in the country. It claims 13,636,659 hours of podcasts were listened-to in the first year on the platform.

Podimo has launched Cold Blood: Nordic True Crime today. The Denmark-born podcast series has already been translated into 6 languages and reached #1 in the Polish charts. Now in English, each episode will delve into startling crimes from Scandinavia - crimes that have dominated headlines and gripped the region. Among others, it looks at a two year bombing spree in Denmark, where the only lead was a series of mysterious letters.

In Prague, Radiodays Europe started yesterday with a number of summits. In the data summit, the team from Podimo presented a new podcast discovery algorithm built for the Podimo app, which uses term extraction (photo); a separate podcast summit included tips on pitching your podcast from the BBC's Leanne Alie. DW Akademie also ran a workshop to help podcasters streamline their creation process. Our Editor also spoke; the conference continues today and tomorrow.

Italian podcast publisher OnePodcast has launched a new premium podcast subscription channel exclusively on Apple Podcasts. With more than eighty shows, you can find it here. On Spotify, Batman Unburied has beaten Rogan to be number 1 podcast in the US. It's not the first time; we noted he was beaten by a sitcom fan podcast in November, and by some internet gamers in October.

Bill Rosenblatt profiles the European podcast market for Forbes, including what he calls Podimo's "promising start". From the UK's Sparklab Productions, Mel Harris says that branded podcasts are definitely a thing. "It's a creative way of building brand loyalty," she says.
