The number of new podcast feeds in April 2024 was lowest in over a year, according to data from Listen Notes.

The latest Listen Notes statistics show a five year low for “new podcasts” in 2023, at just 213,145. (The data actually measures new podcast RSS feeds; many new shows this year launched in RSS feeds from older shows.) While the number of new podcasts was down year-on-year, the number of new episodes increased by 5.5%.

Paid podcast directory Listen Notes is to start its own free podcast host, dubbed Listen Host. The service will require you to use your own custom domain; and will not (initially) provide analytics.

Transistor has given any customer access to their private podcast feature. The company is beta-testing dynamic pre-rolls, and says it has 16,227 podcasts using their service. (Listen Notes suggests 11,529 are in Apple Podcasts).

Chrome browser extension Listen Notes for Chrome says it suggests podcasts to listen to from the website you're looking at. It works from Vox or the New York Times or even Google; not on our website, though.

Shuffle, an iOS podcast player, has redesigned its player too. "We've moved the scrollbar to the side," says the update. The app uses Listen Notes as a podcast directory.

Kaveinthran Pulanthran, a blind podcast listener, has done an accessibility review of Podchaser, Podyssey and Listen Notes. There is work to be done for all three websites. As he adds: accessibility is a design principle, not a feature to be added later. (We would welcome feedback on our accessibility).

There were over 11,100,000 new podcast episodes in 2018. Listen Notes have developed a new "stats" page, looking into their database of podcasts (which appears to include all in Apple Podcasts). 21% of podcasts are hosted at Anchor, and a further 11% at Soundcloud, the results show. (Some great data for any pitching documents!)

Listen Notes has announced that its Listen Alerts service (Google Alerts, but for podcasts) will be a paid-for service from 1 October. The fee will be US$5/month for every five alerts.
