BlogTalkRadio is to close on Jan 31. One of the earliest podcast and live-streaming hosts, it launched in January 2006. It merged with Spreaker in August 2017; Voxnest bought Spreaker in 2018; iHeart bought Voxnest in 2020. Most recently it’s been part of Triton Digital. In August this year, it hosted 3,293 podcasts.

Exclusive: Spain’s Hoy en EL PAÍS has been claiming impressively high download figures; yet today, Podnews can reveal that many of the downloads were never heard. The 14MB podcast was observed automatically downloading, without user intervention, in a browser using an iPhone user-agent - just by visiting the elpais.com homepage.: thus artificially growing the download numbers from every mobile visitor to the website. El País got over 118mn visits in September, according to similar web, making it the largest Spanish newspaper online. It’s owned by Prisa. The podcast is apparently the 12th biggest show, by downloads, on Triton’s Latin America Podcast Ranker, and 45th in Podtrac’s estimated Spanish podcast ranker - the show, hosted by Triton Digital, also appears to contain a spot for programmatic advertising.

The latest Triton Digital Australian Podcast Ranker was released. Listeners are up 15% year-on-year. Of note, many of the catch-up radio shows appear to be publishing full episodes as well as partial highlights in the same feed. A few examples: ARN’s Kyle & Jackie O published 86 episodes in September; Nine’s Ben Fordham posted 160 episodes; SCA’s The Rush Hour posted 128 new episodes. These episodes were all produced from 21 radio programs in September; the auto-download behaviour of most podcast apps meaning that all episodes - clips or the full show - are downloaded. All episodes contain programmatically-inserted advertising.

September 19, 2022:
This could be an attempt to boost "iHeart" numbers on Podtrac. If so, there could be more iHeart traffic to be added: currently unmeasured by Podtrac are Triton Digital and Omny Studio, who are owned by iHeart, and iHeart affiliates, like ARN's iHeartPodcast Network Australia or Bell Media's iHeart Canada.

Triton Digital has released the NZ Podcast Ranker for April 2022. iHeartRadio is #1 for podcasts in the country, operated by NZME, but the ranker doesn't measure public broadcaster RNZ.
May 16, 2022:
Opinion: This 'top publisher' data is based on "the number of podcasts in the top 100", and not based on audience reach nor total downloads. While data from Podtrac and Triton Digital is incomplete, both align well with publisher data we already have from Edison Podcast Metrics, a more robust survey of the whole space, which shows SXM Media at #1, and NPR at #4. To suggest that NPR isn't in the top ten of US podcast publishers is obviously untrue; but helpful narrative for its competitor iHeartMedia. Coincidentally, iHeartMedia owns Media Monitors, a fact not disclosed.
May 11, 2022:
The Australian Podcast Ranker was published for April. Orginal podcasts by both ARN's iHeartPodcast Network and SCA both lost 18% of downloads month-on-month. An incomplete ranker, it measures participating publishers only, and not the country's #1 podcast publisher, the ABC.

The June 2021 US Podcast Report is out from Triton Digital. Stitcher are #1 for a second month, beating NPR (though iH eartRadio isn't measured). Average weekly downloads for the top 10 publishers were up by 5% year-on-year, in spite of an Apple Podcasts auto-download bug and a shift to IAB v2.1. (One investment analyst recently used figures from the competing Podtrac ranker to claim podcasting was in negative growth).
July 15, 2021:
Analysis: Bernstein quotes Podtrac figures as evidence of this 'slowing market', saying that in June, listening sank 16.5% year-on-year. However, Podtrac don't measure Spotify's podcasts; and it's notable that the top ten publishers in Triton Digital's latest Podcast Report for the US (measuring May vs May) shows an 11.4% growth in downloads. However, a bug in Apple Podcasts may affect total downloads in June.

It's the first to be compiled to v2.1 of the IAB Podcast Technical Guidelines: the result is a reduction in average weekly users by around 5% for the top 5 publishers. Triton Digital has published their June Podcast Report for Australia. Total downloads of the top ten publishers are virtually unchanged month-on-month. The report only measures participating publishers; the country's largest podcast publisher, the ABC, is not measured (in spite of being announced as 'joining in the next few months' back in October).

Stitcher is currently owned by EW Scripps, who also own Omny Studio and Triton Digital - their sale leaves Scripps without its own podcast app and podcast networks, though Triton Digital and Omny Studio offer some monetisation tools for podcasters.

June 18, 2020:
Analysis: The podcast market appears to be horizontally consolidating. SiriusXM already owns Pandora and ad-tech company AdsWizz: their acquisition of Simplecast adds a capable podcast host and analytics company, and means they have capabilities in all sectors of the business. They join EW Scripps, who own Omny Studio, Triton Digital, Midroll and Stitcher; Spotify, who own Anchor, Gimlet et al; and Acast, who acquired Pippa and set up their own content studio last year. It's not enough, it seems, to be a great hosting company or a content-creator: the podcast companies of the future appears to need a foot in all parts of the business.
June 16, 2020:
The latest Australian Podcast Report has been released by Triton Digital. ARN's iHeartPodcast Network Australia is the #1 publisher, with 8.4m downloads in May. Audioboom and West Australian Newspapers are new publishers in the report. The ABC, the country's largest podcaster, was promised to be joining "in a few months" back in October, but is still absent. They did not respond to our request for comment. The ranker only measures participating publishers.
June 8, 2020:
Edison Research has revealed its US podcast ranker top 10. Unlike Podtrac or Triton Digital, who only measure downloads from selected publishers, the Edison Research data is calculated from 2,013 online interviews with podcast listeners about all the podcasts they listen to, which is then weighted to be nationally representative, and calculates reach ('people'), rather than total downloads. Joe Rogan is at #1; The Daily at #2; This American Life at #3.

March 20, 2020:
37% of US adults - over 104m people - now listen every month to podcasts, according to the newly-released Infinite Dial 2020 survey from Edison Research and Triton Digital. The figure has grown markedly from 32% a year ago. The data also shows podcasting continuing to head toward gender parity, and increased use of smart speakers. In other news, the research says that almost a third of all Americans no longer own an AM/FM radio.
March 16, 2020:
Triton Digital is reporting that online audio shares to Public Radio and News/Talk stations have grown this last week, says Westwood One, who also wonders what happens to radio figures if everyone works from home? Not much, they say - the figures are deliberately made to smooth out highs and lows, as a average over a number of months. 90.8% of people who work from home are reached by AM/FM radio says the company, which is owned by Cumulus Media, a company that operates 428 radio stations. See below for Tom Webster's take for podcasting.
March 12, 2020:
Spotify is a "frenemy" to podcasters, said News Corp Australia’s head of audio Del Fordham at a conference last week. Triton Digital's Sharon Taylor also acknowledged that publishers are in a "weird position", given Spotify is both a successful platform and a content producer.
March 10, 2020:
Triton Digital have released new rankers for the four weeks ending Feb 16: their new LATAM ranker; and their Australian Podcast Ranker, which was delayed after a typo. The Aussie ranker has a new #1: Stuff You Should Know from iHeartRadio, which is sold in Australia by ARN. From The Newsroom is the highest Aussie podcast in the list, debuting at #2 even though it launched a week into the data period.

February 6, 2020:
Is it possible to become the #2 podcast even if you're not available on podcast apps? A new Australian Podcast Ranker has been released, and the #2 podcast is "Sky News - News Bulletin", audio which is only available on smart speakers (though we found this listing). Similarly, "Fox Sports Audio Bulletin", at #9, is a smart-speaker exclusive. These are both pieces of on-demand audio delivered via RSS, so it's still a "podcast" to the IAB's definitions (and that of Commercial Radio Australia, which runs the ranker): but shows the high level of use of these daily bulletins on speakers.
February 4, 2020:
Omny Studio has built a dynamic ad manager for publishers, called the Omny Campaign Manager, using Triton Digital's ad tech; has added transcription tools (both human and automated); geoblocking tools; enhanced analytics; fully translated web players; and has added a method of delivering ad-free versions of podcasts for subscribers.

Triton Digital is to produce a podcast ranker in the US, called Podcast Reports. Already signed up are NPR, Entercom (inc Cadence13, RADIO·COM and Pineapple Street Media), Stitcher and Cumulus Media (inc Westwood One). The company is already producing a ranker in Australia, the Netherlands and Latin America, and has been producing a ranker for online radio for some time; Triton Digital uses logfiles to produce IAB certified data.

A new Australian Podcast Ranker has been released today. Podcast One's Hamish and Andy return to #1; the highest new entry is The Lighthouse, a true-crime podcast from News Corp. The Parent Brand (publishers of Kinderling Kids Radio), Schwartz Media (The Saturday Paper) and TOFOP have been announced as new publishers from January 2020. The ranker does not yet include the ABC, the country's biggest podcaster; and some publishers have told Podnews they have declined to take part.

October 18, 2019:
Editorial opinion: I was worried that this service would be protectionist and proprietary: but it isn't. The service seems open to all, the technology operated by Triton Digital to IAB standards. Participants get a dashboard with full analytics, too. While the initial list is necessarily made up of the largest publishers, it does seem genuinely open if you hit the technical criteria: though you need to have access to logfiles. You'll remember the Open Downloads initiative which offers portability of logfiles? Suddenly, that seems rather more important. I intend to investigate if I can get Podnews listed in the ranker (though hitting the top 100 might be hard!)

Over half of US adults have listened to a podcast. Edison Research and Triton Digital have published Infinite Dial 2019, a set of research on US media consumption. One third of US adults (90 million people) listened to a podcast over the last month, the survey also reports. You can view the webinar here; or grab the slides. There is lots of data in the release, but - happily for us - the media have focused on podcasting's growth.

Caution: The data, in many places, confuses "top RSS feed hosting platforms" with the audio hosting platform. As an example: the RSS feed for NPR's Up First is hosted by npr·org, but as we note on that page, the audio is hosted by Triton Digital; npr·org is not the "podcast host". Chartable say they are re-running the dataset and will post updated numbers in the next twenty-four hours. Expect Libsyn and Blubrry, who host audio and also offer tools for third-party RSS feed generation, to appear higher in the revised figures.
