London-based podcast publisher Audioboom has just posted a trading update for Q4/23. Q4’s revenue, at $19mn, was up 37% quarter-on-quarter, and up 5% year-on-year. Downloads for the quarter were only down 0.75% year-on-year, in spite of the auto-download changes in Apple Podcasts.

Correction: on Friday we suggested that Audioboom had cancelled a minimum contract. As detailed in the company’s H1/23 financial report, the company has one onerous contract which it made provision for; but Stuart Last, the company’s CEO, tells us “We have not and will not cancel this contract. Audioboom has never cancelled a minimum guarantee that has been contracted with a partner. We honor our contracts with creators including payments of minimum guarantees within those contracts.” We’re happy to make this clear.

UK-based podcast company Audioboom released financials for H1/23. Q2 revenue at US$16.4mn is up 6.5% on Q1 revenue; but the company made a loss. One un-named "individual partner contract" - signed in Q1/22, and lasting until July 2025 - lost $1.8mn in H1/23 and will cost the company $8.9mn in total. Wonder who?

Podcast ad monetisation company Audioboom issued a profit warning. "the Company expects the revenue and adjusted EBITDA for the current financial year to be lower than previously anticipated", it said, adding: "The Company has adjusted the approach taken to calculating its minimum guarantee offers for podcast partners". Shares fell over 27%.

Both claim they're #1 in press releases.

The host of Sword and Scale, Mike Boudet has posted a racially unpleasant poll on Twitter. Boudet was sacked by Wondery in 2019 after similar Twitter comments, and was widely accused of orchestrating one-star reviews against a competitor. He has denied that he left one star reviews; and is also the subject of a YouTube documentary. We've again asked for comment.

First look: Spreaker has launched a programmatic ad quality tool, dubbed MAGDA, which automatically checks ad categories to make sure they're accurate. It was successfully trialed during the midterm elections by Audioboom. The tool - the Machine Augmented Guard for Dynamic Advertising - is also named after Magda, a programmatic specialist at Spreaker in Barcelona, and the first to work on ad quality control.

What's going on with Audioboom's shareholders? Investor Nick Candy sold Aaquaverse £6.75m ($7.9m) of his Audioboom shares in 2021. Aaquaverse is owned by controversial entrepreneur Robert Bonnier, and is connected to All Active Asset Capital who made a £188.3m ($220m) offer to buy Audioboom in July this year. It later withdrew the offer, Aaquaverse sold a third of its shares, and Candy accused Bonnier of fraud, applying in court for his assets to be frozen. Bonnier is now claiming £150m ($175m) in damages.

Audioboom's H1/22 financials were released, showing revenue was up 79% on the same period last year. Profit was $2m, up from last year's $0.2m, and the company's doing 124m downloads a month (up 35%). Shares fell, though, after the company noted "a softening in advertiser demand for Q3/22" because of lower consumer spending.

Audioboom released a Q1/22 trading update. For the quarter, revenue was $19.7m (more than double year-on-year) and the company earned $0.9m EBITDA profit (30x higher year-on-year). It said that it has contracted revenue of $60.5m for this year already: more than it brought in during the whole of 2021.

A few hours ago, Audioboom released its 2021 results to the stock market. The company made its first net profit ($1.4m vs a loss of $3.3m last year), and revenue was up 125% year-on-year. In Q4, their revenue per thousand downloads was $55.85, up 49%. Stuart Last, CEO, said: "Achieving profitability on both an adjusted EBITDA and net basis is transformative, establishing a self-sustaining business funded for continued growth, and reshaping shareholder value."

Audioboom has launched Showcase, its global advertising marketplace. It offers advertisers access to more than 8,000 podcast channels for dynamic advertising, and gives podcasters the opportunity to reach more than 2,000 ad buyers.

All Active Asset Capital has withdrawn its offer to buy Audioboom. It had requested a further extension to its deadline; Audioboom declined. The investment company's statement grumbles about corporate governance, and hints that they might be back.

Spotify is now producing the audio section of US airline Delta's in-flight seatback entertainment. The service contains mixtapes of music, and 42 podcast series including Gimlet's Science Vs, The Ringer's The Dave Chang Show and WSJ/Gimlet's The Journal, as well as Crime Junkie (which isn't a Spotify show). Spotify's original deal with Delta was announced two years ago: at that time it was podcast-only, and Delta was seeing around 16.5m passengers every month; JetBlue also signed with Spotify in November 2019. Podcasts are also on other airlines.

Audioboom has closed its Indian office. "While the podcast market in India has grown over the past 5 years, it has not become big enough for us to sustain an operation there. Our hosting platform will still be available to podcasters in India of course," CEO Stuart Last tells Podnews. "We're still focused on global expansion, but need to be smart in how we do that. The US and UK remain our core regions, but we are the biggest international podcast publisher in Australia, and we are currently developing a new partnership in Canada that will grow podcasting there."

The latest Australian Podcast Report has been released by Triton Digital. ARN's iHeartPodcast Network Australia is the #1 publisher, with 8.4m downloads in May. Audioboom and West Australian Newspapers are new publishers in the report. The ABC, the country's largest podcaster, was promised to be joining "in a few months" back in October, but is still absent. They did not respond to our request for comment. The ranker only measures participating publishers.

Podcasting's bigger than ever. ARN's iHeartPodcast Network Australia says that podcast listening is 22% larger than even before the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The company has published detailed stats for categories, and has also announced commercial partnerships with Audioboom and Kast Media.

In 2014, CBS was told to pay $1.3m for "violating a podcast patent"; which was ruled invalid by a court action in Aug 8 2017. A "final rejection" was given by the Supreme Court in May 15 2018. On Friday, Personal Audio LLC lost their appeal in the Federal Circuit, which means this - finally - goes away.

Deezer is coming after Spotify, and has substantially strengthened its podcast offering, partnering with Libsyn, Ausha, Podomatic, Blubrry and Simplecast in addition to Audioboom and Spreaker. Podcasters on those platforms will find automated submission tools; though you can add a podcast to Deezer from any platform. It reports a 250% increase in podcast usage on its platform over the last two years.

The CEO of Audioboom, Robert Proctor, has resigned. The company's COO Stuart Last has been appointed Interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement. The resignation comes a week before the company's third-quarter trading update.

Yesterday, we reported that Audioboom had called off its acquisition of Triton Digital. We're being told by some Audioboom publishers that they have not been paid by the company since February. Audioboom's COO, Stuart Last, says that any non-payment is "not good enough", and in an email to Podnews, he says the company is working hard to get back to normal after the failure of the Triton Digital acquisition. BREAKING: The Audioboom takeover of Triton Digital is no longer going ahead. The note released to the markets notes a £1m loan that Audioboom got in February, says Audioboom only has "sufficient working capital for a further period of up to four weeks from today's date", that the withdrawl will cost Audioboom a further £700,000 in a break clause, and that its "financial position remains uncertain". The note also warns of a possibility of winding up the company. Shares in Audioboom remain suspended. Audioboom's also announced they have a new CFO, Brad Clarke.

An FAQ for publishers says: "Your listener numbers will likely be lower in your dashboard, but you aren’t actually losing listeners. What may appear to be a decrease in listeners is really just a more accurate assessment of your audience." Meantime, the company sees revenues up 447% in the last six months to "at least £1.8m". Fill rates for US live reads now at 70% (notable that they specify US here). Unique users also up significantly.
