    The Podcast Academy has launched a podcast of its own. Podcast 360 launches today - with a different host, and a different interviewee, each week. The show features podcast company founders interviewing each other as they answer three questions about all things podcasting, and is produced by DCP Entertainment.

    The new board of The Podcast Academy has been announced: "Congratulations to Donald Albright, Chris Cochran, Sirisha Kuchimanchi, Juleyka Lantigua, Christy Mirabal, Sierra Reed, Jen Sargent and Matty Staudt as they join or continue on with our Board of Governors starting May 1st."

    Members of The Podcast Academy are able to vote for new board members.     The recipient of the Podcast Academy's Board of Governors Award will be announced later today. The honor "recognizes the impact a podcast or individual has had on the industry". We assume that The Hollywood Reporter will have all the information you should be aware of.

    The Ambies has announced its full list of nominees. Voting is up to you, if you're a member of The Podcast Academy: check your email to find out how to vote. The winners will be announced in the International Theater at the Westgate in Las Vegas NV, USA, on March 7.

    The Podcast Academy has launched a special package for independent podcast creators. The package provides free TPA membership (with masterclasses, networking events, and a mentorship programme) and a free submission to The Ambies. You can apply on the TPA website.

    The Ambies, the awards from The Podcast Academy that celebrate excellence in podcasting, took place last night. The winners are here: 9/12, from Amazon Music, Pineapple Studios and Wondery was the podcast of the year; the podcast's host Dan Taberski accepted the award in the award ceremony in Los Angeles CA, USA.

    BREAKING: The Podcast Academy has just announced that Serial will be awarded the Governors Award, recognising the impact a podcast or individual has had on the industry. Co-creators Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder will accept the award at The Ambies next Tuesday.

    Voting is now open for The Podcast Academy Board of Governors. It's the first election; the Academy's rules are that 40% need to be "independent podcasting professionals", which is defined as companies with 20 employees or less. Voting is by members only: look in your email for a mail called "Board of Governors Vote!"

    Behind the Mic with AudioFile Magazine today features a chat with Pushkin Industries owner Malcolm Gladwell interviewed by Michele Cobb (who is publisher of AudioFile Magazine, and also Executive Director of The Podcast Academy). "Gladwell’s enthusiasm for the podcast format is one of the founding principles of Pushkin and this special episode explores what is beyond the boundaries of traditional audiobooks as a result of the explosion of the podcasting industry."

    Amanda Nazereno has been hired as Director of Education at The Podcast Academy. She was selected for Spotify's first Sound Up! cohort, and has been podcasting since July 2018.

    Podnews's Editor is speaking later today for The Podcast Academy members: the title is "Podcasting: A Whole World of Opportunity". James Cridland from Podnews talks about the podcast landscape outside the US, and the opportunities it gives us - from the different platforms used, the types of shows listened-to, and what that means for US-based podcasters. The webinar starts at 7pm ET.

    In an award ceremony live from Los Angeles, California, The Ambies were announced last night, the first podcast awards from The Podcast Academy. The podcast of the year went to Wondery's Dying For Sex. The awards seemed to be a streaming success, too, with 25,000 people watching at peak. From the full list of winners, Amazon's Wondery was the winning studio of the night, with five awards announced; Crooked Media getting four, and QCODE with three. The podcast with the biggest award haul was Wind of Change, with three separate wins.

    The nominations for the Ambies, The Podcast Academy's awards for excellence in audio, have been announced. They were chosen by 120 members who volunteered to be on the Blue Ribbon Panel, and listened to over 30 episodes each, rating them across multiple variables.     The Podcast Academy has announced that Donald Albright from Tenderfoot TV will be their Chairperson for 2021 (replacing Rob Greenlee); Spoke Media's Alia Tavakolian is Secretary (replacing Kerri Hoffman); Anya Grundmann from NPR is Treasurer, replacing Christy Mirabel from SonyMusic Entertainment who becomes Vice-Chairperson, Donald Albright's former position. We reported on three new board members on Friday.
January 8, 2021:
    The Podcast Academy has announced three new members of the Board: Kintan Brahmbhatt (GM of Podcasts at Amazon Music), Amy S. Choi (The Mash-Up Americans), and DeRay Mckesson (a civil rights activist and host of Pod Save the People). The new Executive Committee has also been appointed, including a new Chairperson; an announcement of who that is may be made later today.

    Exclusive: Speaking on an episode of the Podland podcast to be released later today, Rob Greenlee has announced he is to step down as Chair of the Podcast Academy this month, as part of significant changes in the board of governors. "The board has decided to re-elect all new officers," he explains.

    Lopez will still be involved with The Podcast Academy, we understand. He will also be assisting the transition as a consultant with Amazon for several months.

Amazon don't get Wondery's current CEO, Hernan Lopez: a charismatic leader, he'll step down as the deal is done, saying "I will be transitioning out of the company to focus my attention on my recently announced Hernan Lopez Family Foundation, which is committed to addressing diversity in leadership both from the demand side as well as the supply side." Lopez has been keen to add Hollywood-style razamatazz to the industry, working to launch The Podcast Academy earlier this year, which is focusing on their own awards ceremony The Ambies.

    "And The Ambie for best daily podcasting newsletter goes to..." The Podcast Academy has announced The Ambies, the organisation's podcast awards. Nominations will be accepted from next Monday: the name is from "ambient sound".
October 13, 2020:
    The Podcast Academy is to announce the details of their first annual awards today at 5pm Eastern. The webinar is free to members. The organisation has also released a mission statement. Speaking on The New Media Show last weekend, Rob Greenlee, the Chair of The Podcast Academy, confirmed that the organisation will not play a part in setting technical standards.

    The Podcast Academy's membership price goes up October 1st. Our Editor is a member, and so should you be. The Academy also will shortly announce categories and nominees for the Academy's first annual awards ceremony. We're hoping for a "best daily podcast news email" category.

    The latest Podcasting Essentials has an interview with the newly announced Chair of The Podcast Academy, Rob Greenlee. Rob talks about how he's planning on leading The Podcast Academy, what the goals of the organisation are, who can join and the process.

    The New Media Show had Adam Curry on their latest show. Known as the "podfather", he came up with the idea of adding file enclosures to RSS feeds, which many cite as the invention of podcasting. He discusses Joe Rogan, Spotify, The Podcast Academy and his donation model.

    The Podcast Academy has relaxed the terms of new registrations. "No more letters of recommendation", says the Chair, Rob Greenlee: you'll just need to give the names of two people to vouch for you.

    After opening memberships on Monday, the first members of The Podcast Academy are being told they've been accepted (including our Editor). Rob Greenlee says that the organisation is working on a faster, more streamlined registration process, after some people report being deluged with requests to write letters of recommendation.

    The Podcast Academy have posted an updated Board of Governors. Rob Greenlee from Libsyn has been confirmed as the Chair; governors include Conal Byrne from iHeartMedia, Ben Cave from Apple, Anya Grundmann from NPR and Courtney Holt from Spotify. The Board also includes podcast producers, talent agents, and studios. Google is absent.

    The founding governors of The Podcast Academy met recently, we're told. The organisation's planning has been a little delayed due to the coronavirus, but we can expect a set of announcements next month.
April 8, 2020:
    Two former senior executives who worked for Rupert Murdoch at 21st Century Fox have been indicted over their alleged role in a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving kickbacks to FIFA and Conmebol officials in exchange for broadcast rights. One of those indicted is Hernan Lopez, now CEO of Wondery and a founder of the Podcast Academy. "The indictment contains nothing more than [a] single paragraph about Mr Lopez that alleges nothing remotely improper," Matthew Umhofer, representing Lopez, said in a statement; Lopez is scheduled for arraignment in federal court in Brooklyn on Apr 9.

    Opinion: We'd hope that The Podcast Academy is the industry's place to create those standards - if podcast hosts and app developers are represented in that organisation, and if it isn't just made up of representatives from the US, a country that has a lamentable record in privacy protection.

    The Podcast Academy, first announced a few weeks ago, has sent their first email, announcing that they anticipate accepting members in early Spring. The email also contains some interesting information about the Academy's administrative staff, and its relationship to a similar organisation.

    Nick Quah weighs in about The Podcast Academy. "There is a way to approach this cynically: give up trying to fully represent the podcast universe as a whole and instead build the buzziest possible coalition ... But the involvement of founding member PRX in particular, which has historically advocated to preserve the open nature of podcasting, suggests that such a bottom-line strategy isn’t in the cards."
