The satirical look at the week's news is hosted by Andy Zaltzman and produced by Chris Skinner, and apart from the pun runs is of excellent quality - as it should be after sixteen years. SiriusXM released its Q2/23 financials. Podcast ad revenue was higher, though not split out in the results; programming costs were higher too. Pandora fared less well, selling fewer ads, and reaching 3m fewer people per month. The word "Stitcher" doesn't appear once in the results; the podcast app closes at the end of this month.

By way of illustration, the #10 podcast app for Android devices has 2.42% of all downloads; the #10 podcast app for Apple devices has four times less, at 0.6%. (The #10 podcast app for Android was Stitcher, which announced its closure this week).

One of the oldest podcast apps, Stitcher is to close on Aug 29. An internal memo, seen by Podnews, says that the "scale and reach of our widely-distributed podcasts has been and remains a crucial accelerant for our advertising sales business". In January, Stitcher was the sixth-biggest podcast app in the US, according to Podtrac - though it had lost a quarter of its users in two years, and had only 1.3% of the market.

Just days after Shameless Acquisition Target's RSS feed was bought, its host Laura Mayer has been announced as the new executive producer of Podcast Programming at ABC Audio. She joins from Three Uncanny Four Productions, Stitcher and Slate (where she was Panoply's first employee).

The creators of How Did This Get Made? have signed a further deal with SiriusXM, Earwolf and Stitcher. The multi-year extensions are to this main show, which started in 2010 and has had 40 million downloads so far, and the companion series Unspooled.

Opinion: SiriusXM claims that Stitcher has transcripts available for "some but not all" podcasts, and has "been working diligently to identify and select the technology to implement closed captioning". Let's save them the time - the solution is the podcast:transcript tag, which is in production in a number of podcast hosts, including Buzzsprout, Captivate and others. An already-supported, creator-friendly, open tool that allows both transcripts and closed-captioning could certainly help.

With SXM Media, Leslie Jones is to launch her first podcast, The Fckry, with comedian Lenny Marcus. On the weekly podcast, Jones and Marcus will discuss a range of goings-on, from how they started out in the comedy biz to topical political issues. The name's Rubirosa: Porfirio Rubirosa. Rubirosa has just been announced by Stitcher - a new documentary podcast created and hosted by actor, author and storyteller Christopher Rivas. It will tell the story of Porfirio Rubirosa, the Dominican diplomat and playboy who may have inspired Ian Fleming’s iconic James Bond character.

Another day, another podcast deal for SiriusXM, which has signed with YMH Studios, the podcast network owned by Tom Segura and Christina P. The multi-year agreement integrates the YMH Studios staff into Stitcher, where they will continue to operate Your Mom's House and the rest of the network's slate. Shows will continue to be made available everywhere, and ad-free versions will be in Stitcher Premium.

Stitcher has signed an "exclusive national distribution deal" with US public radio station NHPR. NHPR is an NPR member station, and is the first public radio station to do a deal with Stitcher. Stitcher competes with NPR's National Public Media for ad revenue, as we understand it.

Another high-profile podcast signing: SiriusXM has done a deal with Ashley Flowers' podcast network Audiochuck. Audiochuck was previously with AdLarge. SiriusXM has done a number of deals this month, including Rory and Mal, Last Podcast on the Left, and production company Audio Up. Through its ownership of Stitcher, the company is #1 for podcasts according to Triton Digital's US podcast ranker.

SiriusXM's Stitcher has signed Rory Farrell and Jamil 'MAL' Clay, to bring New Rory & MAL to their More Sauce network. It's the latest high-profile podcast signing from Stitcher. Not in the press release: any mention of Joe Budden, who fired the duo from his podcast in May.

Last Podcast On The Left has announced it's no longer to be a Spotify Exclusive show. They've signed with SiriusXM's Stitcher, and will be available in every podcast app, including Spotify, from Feb 1 2022; they'd been exclusive since Feb 2020.

Triton Digital has released the US Podcasting Report for August. Downloads are up 11% from July, as the Apple bugfix rolled out. Stitcher is #1 for podcasts, though NPR is just 70,000 downloads behind; it measures participating publishers only.

Simplecast founder and CEO Brad Smith has been promoted: he's been named Head of Podcast Products for SiriusXM. Simplecast was acquired by SiriusXM last year; SiriusXM also owns Pandora, Stitcher and Adswizz. Smith will be responsible for podcast strategy across platforms for creators and listeners. SiriusXM's CEO, Jennifer Witz, said on Monday that the company plans a broader set of podcasts available to Pandora listeners, and will continue to publish across multiple platforms, though also suggested some opportunities for exclusivity.

First look: Podcast producer Jam Street Media has been acquired by Amaze Media Labs, in a deal announced today. No terms were given. Amaze Media Labs owns a number of podcast networks; Jam Street Media is run by Matty Staudt, a member of the start-up team at Stitcher and iHeartRadio's first VP of Podcast Programming.

The June 2021 US Podcast Report is out from Triton Digital. Stitcher are #1 for a second month, beating NPR (though iH eartRadio isn't measured). Average weekly downloads for the top 10 publishers were up by 5% year-on-year, in spite of an Apple Podcasts auto-download bug and a shift to IAB v2.1. (One investment analyst recently used figures from the competing Podtrac ranker to claim podcasting was in negative growth).

Stitcher Media is the new #1 podcast publisher in the US, according to the latest Triton Digital US Podcast Report for the four weeks ending May 30. The company, owned by SiriusXM, beat NPR for both average weekly downloads and listeners. NPR News Now is still the #1 podcast, though. It's the first to be compiled to v2.1 of the IAB Podcast Technical Guidelines: the result is a reduction in average weekly users by around 5% for the top 5 publishers. The ranker measures participating publishers only; iHeartRadio owns Triton Digital, but it is not included in the ranker.

German podcast company Viertausendhertz runs a premium service, similar to Wondery+ or Stitcher Premium. The membership company they use is called Steady. They note: 'We now “advertise” the opportunity to support us, rather than the benefits of membership'. (You can support Podnews over here).
Wondery's success has been international in scope, reaching agreements with a variety of advertising partners outside the US, like Canada, Australia and the UK, where it launched a joint venture with Stitcher.

Thread titles include: "This update has altered the meaning of 'premium'", "How can you make an update worse than the old version?" and "Rename it Shitcher". Ouch. Kevin Bartelt, Senior Producer at Earwolf, has announced that he'll be leaving Earwolf in January. His podcast, Hollywood Handbook, was to leave the network, but a day later that the pro version will remain with Stitcher Premium. Yo, Is This Racist? is also to leave Earwolf.

SiriusXM is the New Destination for Original, Exclusive, and Popular Podcasts claims a press release, promoting new podcasts with Marvel Entertainment. (Marvel had a relationship with Stitcher, which we covered in 2018; then they signed with Pandora and SiriusXM in 2019). The company has also announced further exclusives.

SiriusXM has become "the exclusive advertising representative and end-to-end ad tech platform for a broad slate of NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC podcasts", says a press release. The agreement includes Stitcher, AdsWizz and Simplecast, which the company owns.

Veritone has launched an audio licensing library, including audio from CBS News and Bloomberg. Already being used by companies like Stitcher and Audible, the service also allows podcasters to make their clips available for licensing too.

Apple secretly bought Scout FM earlier this year, and promptly shut the Android and iOS app down. Scout FM, which we covered in June 2018, created podcast "stations" on various topics, basing its recommendations on listening habits, much like early Stitcher's non-stop streams. Stitcher have launched ‘More Sauce,’ a network dedicated to championing Black voices. The network was "created to empower Black voices to be completely authentic and unapologetic in their storytelling." Meanwhile, iHeartMedia and radio personality Charlamagne Tha God have launched The Black Effect Podcast Network, which the company says is "positioned to become the world’s largest podcast publisher dedicated to Black listeners".

SiriusXM's financial report for Q2 2020 has been released. The company owns Stitcher, Simplecast, Pandora and AdsWizz. The acquisition price for Simplecast, unreported at the time, was $28m.

Triton Digital have published their latest US Podcast Report. SiriusXM's Stitcher has overtaken Entercom's Cadence13 in the network ranker. It's official: Scripps has agreed to sell Stitcher to SiriusXM - the agreed price is $325m ($265m cash plus earnouts). Stitcher is a podcast advertising saleshouse, an original podcast studio, and an app.

Analysis: The podcast market appears to be horizontally consolidating. SiriusXM already owns Pandora and ad-tech company AdsWizz: their acquisition of Simplecast adds a capable podcast host and analytics company, and means they have capabilities in all sectors of the business. It's not enough, it seems, to be a great hosting company or a content-creator: the podcast companies of the future appears to need a foot in all parts of the business.

Jam Street Media, an LA-based production and consulting firm, has launched a podcast network. It was founded by Matty Staudt, former vice president of podcast programming at iHeartRadio and director of content at Stitcher.

MIDiA Research has released data apparently showing that Spotify is more popular than Apple Podcasts in the UK, Australia and Canada: and is also "within margin of survey error" in the US. The chart, reported in The Motley Fool, also shows that Google Podcasts is virtually as popular as Apple Podcasts (which is not supported by any podcast consumption data we've seen), and that Apple Music is apparently a more popular podcast app than Stitcher or Downcast. It doesn't have any podcasts in it though?

Triton Digital is to produce a podcast ranker in the US, called Podcast Reports. Already signed up are NPR, Entercom (inc Cadence13, RADIO·COM and Pineapple Street Media), Stitcher and Cumulus Media (inc Westwood One). The company is already producing a ranker in Australia, the Netherlands and Latin America, and has been producing a ranker for online radio for some time; Triton Digital uses logfiles to produce IAB certified data.

Forever Dog's comedy podcasts will be on Stitcher Premium first, the companies have announced. Shows will play first on the Stitcher Premium platform, released ad-free and in multi-episode sets: described as "binge-friendly".

Triton Digital paid $8.5m for Omny Studio, it was revealed in owner Scripps's earnings call. Triton Digital revenue is down more than 10% but is refocusing on core businesses. Revenue at Stitcher is up by 41.4%, says the iHeart-owned InsideRadio.

Rob Walch from Libsyn has released the latest download figures for podcasts hosted on Libsyn on mobile apps: Apple Podcasts 59.9%; Spotify 10%; Overcast: 2.9%; Castbox 2.5%; Stitcher 2%; Podcast Addict 1.6%; Google 1.3% and Pocketcast 1.2%. Luminary have responded to our many stories about them on Friday, clearly stating they will continue to remove links from shownotes "due to important security concerns". As we replied on Twitter, show notes are left intact in the majority of podcast apps, including Apple Podcasts. Buzzfeed News reports that Apple has now removed Alex Jones's podcasts from its platform, saying "Apple does not tolerate hate speech". Previously, Spotify had removed specific episodes. Infowars content has additionally been removed from Stitcher, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest. Spreaker, who describe themselves as the "secondary host" of the podcast, have also removed the podcast from their listings: "it violates our Terms and Service Conditions because of Hate Speech," said a spokesperson for the company. Spreaker's action will effectively pull it off most third-party podcast apps. In a response, the radio host claims "this is the modern day electronic equivalent of book burning"; as of press time, his self-hosted RSS feed is still available.
