November 19, 2024:
22.7% of shows started on Spotify for Creators in January haven’t posted a new episode since the end of February - that’s better than the average, as is 20.4% for Ausha, 18.9% for Megaphone, 12.6% for Podbean and 12.3% for Libsyn. As you’d expect, podcast hosting companies with well-publicised free trials show the highest levels of podfade, including Spreaker (40%), RSS (71%) and Hubhopper (83%).
November 14, 2024:
BlogTalkRadio is to close on Jan 31. One of the earliest podcast and live-streaming hosts, it launched in January 2006. It merged with Spreaker in August 2017; Voxnest bought Spreaker in 2018; iHeart bought Voxnest in 2020. Most recently it’s been part of Triton Digital. In August this year, it hosted 3,293 podcasts.

Pocket Casts uses the standard podcast:transcript feature in your podcast RSS feed. It doesn’t generate transcripts for you: like your thumbnail image and your audio, it’s all in your control. Podcast transcripts are supported by a number of large podcast hosting companies, including Blubrry, Buzzsprout, RSS.com, Transistor, Spreaker and others.
September 5, 2024:
Spreaker has made changes to its auto-optimisation feature, which adds advertisements to podcasts. The company looks as if it has opted more podcasters into the tool, which appears to now recommend more ad breaks - some podcasters report an ad break is being inserted every five minutes. (You can adjust it back down).
September 4, 2024:
Spreaker is to launch Spreaker Create, a way to create a podcast directly from the Spreaker app. The company has opened beta testing for the new feature. Spotify removed a similar function earlier this year for users of its Spotify for Podcasters host.
September 2, 2024:
Megaphone has overtaken Triton Digital’s Omny Studio as the #4 biggest podcast host, according to total episode share in August measured by Livewire. Spreaker continues to take more episode share at #2; Spotify for Podcasters is still #1, though has lost almost a quarter of its market share this year.
August 26, 2024:
Above - what a request from the Apple Podcasts web player looks like, as seen by OP3. The user-agent looks like a browser; but the “referer” header makes it clear that this is coming from Apple Podcasts. Many podcast hosting companies (Ausha, Buzzsprout, Spreaker, Captivate and Transistor), and OP3, are using the referer to count these as Apple Podcasts downloads.
August 20, 2024:
Statistics in your podcast host - We asked a variety of podcast hosts. Ausha, Buzzsprout and Spreaker will correctly list this as Apple Podcasts. Omny Studio lists this separately as an Apple Podcasts website play. Captivate, Podbean, Megaphone, Spotify for Podcasters and RSS.com will list this as a browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc).

A significant jump for Spreaker is seen in the share of new podcast episodes in March, according to Livewire. Spreaker’s use of Podping, a simple mechanism to advertise new published episodes, may be the reason why. Podbean overtook Spotify’s Megaphone to claim #6.

As one open standard gets integrated by Apple (the transcript), another has been integrated by Spreaker. The company now supports podping, a near-instant way of communicating to podcast directories that you’ve published a new episode. Already supported by companies like Buzzsprout, Blubrry, Transistor, RSS.com and Captivate (and us!), the addition of Spreaker adds a signficant number of shows, says John Spurlock.

It's powered by Spreaker, though you don't need to be a customer to use it. It hosts the SRT file itself, which is ideal to add it to your RSS feed.

Hmm: Spreaker's "free professional hosting", promised in a press release that Podnews covered on Friday, appears to be just a small tweak to the company's already existing free plan. After the press release's title, "Spreaker goes free", and the first paragraph, "Starting today, creators can use Spreaker’s professional podcast platform at zero cost," we were misled into believing this was a new offer. Sorry.
