July 24, 2024:

In Canadaland's COMMONS feed at the moment: an English translation of Radio France's award-winning podcast Inside Kabul - the story of two young Afghan women, Raha and Marwa, whose lives are forever changed when the Taliban comes to power. Over the course of a year, Raha and Marwa exchange and record hundreds of voice notes with noted journalist Caroline Gillet. What emerges is a raw and incredibly intimate chronicle of two young women coming of age amidst the collapse of the world they had known. It's the first show that Canadaland has licensed in this way.

Canadaland’s Alan Black and Story Studio Network’s Erin Trafford have been confirmed for a session at next weekend’s Podcast Power-up Summit in Toronto. The event is Sunday afternoon in downtown Toronto; other speakers include Laura Mayer, Eric Nuzum and our Editor, James Cridland.

Canadian podcast publisher Canadaland, which launched Pretendians earlier this week, has plans for more shows - and a new brand name for some of its content. Jesse Brown and Julie Shapiro are interviewed in this week’s Podnews Weekly Review.

From the Governor's mansion to Hollywood, co-hosts Robert Jago (Kwantlen First Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe) and Angel Ellis (Muscogee (Creek) Nation) reveal unbelievable stories of identity theft. So why do these so-called “Pretendians” do it? And what happens when they are exposed?

February 26, 2024:

Canadaland announced its slate for 2024. The independent, supporter driven Canadian podcast company will add four new original shows, new seasons and ongoing shows.

February 15, 2024:

CanadaLabs has been launched by CanadaLand - an initiative for Canadian journalists to help them learn, network, build skills and careers, and develop audiences. It is launching with a local correspondent audio contest, an audio journalist fellowship program, and a set of events and workshops.

October 5, 2023:

Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa, writes about the CRTC's registration requirements for podcast services, criticising the media regulator's process, and concluding that it "did not want to give Canadians a reasonable opportunity to have their say". (He also writes a decent explainer). Meanwhile, Canadaland's Jesse Brown is concerned: "What they're signalling is, 'We are going to be regulating the space, but we're not telling you how.' That makes it very hard," he told Canada's CBC.

September 6, 2023:

The Hot Docs Podcast Festival in Toronto released its full program. The first in-person Festival since 2019, the festival welcomes a slate of international and Canadian podcasts, including The New Yorker's Fiction Podcast, Articles of Interest, and Dinner SOS. It also hosts the Creators Forum on October 19 and 20, featuring top executives, producers and hosts from Acast, Bumper, Canadaland, CBC Podcasts, Condé Nast, HBO, Media Girlfriends, NPR, Pushkin Industries and more.

June 2, 2023:

Canadaland is looking for podcast pitches. "For a series to spark our interest and belong on our network, it needs to be unique, surprising, and instantly compelling."

May 29, 2023:

Julie Shapiro has been hired as a supporter and advisor to Canadaland, the Canadian podcast network. She had been with Novel, PRX and Radiotopia.

May 3, 2023:

Karyn Pugliese has been named the Editor-in-Chief of Canadaland, a podcast network.

September 14, 2022:

Podcast monetisation company Acast has signed Canadaland, an independent podcast network in Canada.
