The owner of Pocket Casts, Automattic, is to sell data from posts on Wordpress and Tumblr to train AI tools, 404 Media has reported. Sites will need to opt out.

Popular podcast app Pocket Casts has added a bookmarks feature, letting premium users mark those parts of podcasts they want to come back to later. You can add bookmarks from the app or directly through your headphones. The Android app is also to display episode artwork in more places.

Apostrophes shouldn't matter for podcast search. Pocket Casts appears to need an apostrophe typed in exactly, otherwise it won't find a show. We've reported it as a bug; but the name of the show is a good edge-case for testing.

Pocket Casts released v7.27 last week, which appears to contain the AVURLAssetHTTPUserAgentKey fix, so it no longer calls itself AppleCoreMedia. We've confirmed (by listening to PodClock's S1E1 episode) that it now correctly calls itself Pocket Casts when playing on-demand shows.

Will Pocket Casts beat Apple Podcasts in adding a correct useragent for all podcast requests? Now it's open source, John Spurlock submitted a pull request adding the correct useragent code, which has been accepted and will be in Pocket Casts later this month. Disappointingly, Apple Podcasts itself has yet to implement the company's own code, introduced for iOS 16.

The company was bought by Automattic last year, and say they are "working on a rather large update at the moment".

Podcast app (and website) Pocket Casts has been bought by Automattic, the owners of Wordpress and Tumblr. No terms were given; co-founders Russell Ivanovic and Philip Simpson, based in Adelaide SA, Australia, will continue to lead Pocket Casts as part of Automattic; WordPress says "we will explore building deep integrations with WordPress.com and Pocket Casts", which might mean they have aspirations as a podcast hosting company. (They understand RSS after all).
