AdsWizz has successfully recertified for v2.1 of the IAB Podcast Measurement program. Podtrac and Simplecast also recertified in March. On the IAB TechLab website, there are still a number of companies only certified to v2.0, who haven’t recertified in more than three years: Anchor (now Spotify), Buzzsprout, Captivate, Chartable, Libsyn, Megaphone and Podbean.

Correction: Yesterday, we said that the Locked On Podcast Network were represented by Libsyn Ads before they signed with Adswizz. We based this on a page on the Libsyn Ads website which sold “a full network buy” of the Locked On Network. That page was deleted after we published yesterday; and both companies say that Locked On did not work with Libsyn Ads, so we clearly got things wrong and we regret the error. We’re told they were with Spotify/Megaphone.

Ten podcast companies are still not certified for the latest version of the IAB’s podcast measurement guidelines v2.1, in spite of being asked to do so by the end of 2022. More than a year later, the IAB’s list of compliant companies still shows AdsWizz, Anchor (now Spotify), Buzzsprout, Captivate, Chartable, Libsyn, Megaphone, Podbean, Podtrac and Simplecast as only compliant to v2.0 of the guidelines, something that means “they will lose current status”, according to the IAB Tech Lab.

What’s the future for IAB Podcast Measurement? In November 2022, we reported that the IAB’s v2.0 certification would no longer be valid after Dec 31 2023. As of today, some of podcasting’s largest names are still only compliant to v2.0, and all will lose their claim to certification by the end of the year unless recertified: Adswizz, Buzzsprout, Captivate, Chartable, “EmpireStreaming” (now Soundstack), Libsyn, PodBean, Podtrac, Simplecast, and “Anchor” (now Spotify Creator Studio).

In the Netherlands, the owner of the NRC Handelsblad newspaper NRC Media has launched the Audiohuis Podcast Network. The company will sell advertising across the network, including third party shows and AdsWizz's PodWave audio marketplace in the country. "We want to become the authority in the Netherlands in the field of podcasting," said Madelon Fortuin, NRC Media's Commercial Director.

Simplecast founder and CEO Brad Smith has been promoted: he's been named Head of Podcast Products for SiriusXM. Simplecast was acquired by SiriusXM last year; SiriusXM also owns Pandora, Stitcher and Adswizz. Smith will be responsible for podcast strategy across platforms for creators and listeners. SiriusXM's CEO, Jennifer Witz, said on Monday that the company plans a broader set of podcasts available to Pandora listeners, and will continue to publish across multiple platforms, though also suggested some opportunities for exclusivity.

Experian has bought Tapad for $280m. Attribution company Podsights describes them this way: "A number of providers have sprung up in the last decade offering … massive [databases] of every household IP mapped to identifiers they have seen at that IP. Tapad and Drawbridge are two of the largest." Acast, AdsWizz, Podsights and Chartable use them among others.

Meanwhile, AdsWizz is making 1,000,000 podcast episodes available for advertising using contextual targeting. SiriusXM owns Pandora, a US-only music service and podcast app), AdsWizz, a programmatic audio ads technology company, and Simplecast, a podcast host and analytics service, along with the US satellite radio service. Stitcher encompasses Midroll, a podcast advertising company selling ads for 350 shows, podcast production networks Stitcher Podcasts and Earwolf which make 50 shows, and a podcast app.

Analysis: The podcast market appears to be horizontally consolidating. SiriusXM already owns Pandora and ad-tech company AdsWizz: their acquisition of Simplecast adds a capable podcast host and analytics company, and means they have capabilities in all sectors of the business. They join EW Scripps, who own Omny Studio, Triton Digital, Midroll and Stitcher; Spotify, who own Anchor, Gimlet et al; and Acast, who acquired Pippa and set up their own content studio last year. It's not enough, it seems, to be a great hosting company or a content-creator: the podcast companies of the future appears to need a foot in all parts of the business.

SiriusXM, which also owns Pandora and AdsWizz, has filed its annual report for 2019. Pandora has 6.2m paid subscribers and 63.5m monthly active users. Pandora brought in $1.6bn revenue ($1.1bn from advertising) although the company admit Pandora's number of monthly active users "has declined consistently for several years".

AudioGO is being promoted by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices as an ad platform to over 50,000 network agents across the US.

French publisher Lagardère Publicité has selected AdsWizz for programmatic ad insertion and analytics. Lagardère runs, among others, Europe 1, RFM and Virgin Radio France. Stats: Europe 1 is seeing 25m downloads per month, a figure which has doubled in two years. Lagardère claims it is the most podcasted commercial radio company in the country.
