Tortoise Media launches latest three-part podcast series, Making sense of Sustainable Farming

Press Release ·

Tortoise Media is to launch its latest podcast, Making sense of Sustainable Farming, a new three-part series exploring how we feed Britain while safeguarding the environment and creating a financially viable future for farmers.

Farming has been central to British life for centuries, but over the past century the industry has undergone dramatic changes. Following the Second World War the UK prioritised food security and adopted policies to maximise production for a growing population. Today, farmers face a new set of challenges – with climate change, policy shifts and global uncertainties transforming the agricultural landscape.

The three-part podcast series, supported by Lloyds Banking Group, speaks to farmers and experts at the forefront of the shift toward sustainable farming. It explores innovative approaches and solutions that balance food production with environmental stewardship and fair incomes for farmers.

Jeevan Vasagar, Editor at Tortoise, said: “The story of farming today is about resilience and reinvention. It’s a complex challenge – feeding a growing population while reversing environmental damage and ensuring farmers thrive financially. This series dives into these pressing issues and highlights the work being done to reshape the future of British farming – from improving soil health to deploying robots.”

Ben Makowiecki, Agriculture Sustainability Director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “The agricultural industry is navigating a period of significant change, with farmers balancing challenges such as climate unpredictability and low margins. At the same time, they are being asked to make their businesses more environmentally sustainable.

“As the biggest lender to UK agriculture, Lloyds Banking Group is committed to supporting farmers through this transition. We have recently funded over 800 farmers to participate in environmental baselining activity through Soil Association Exchange and provide access to funding enabling them to adapt while remaining financially viable.

“Initiatives like these, alongside green lending options such as our Clean Growth Finance Incentive (CFGI), are critical to helping safeguard the future of British agriculture, and we are proud to play a part in supporting farmers through this journey.”

Making sense of sustainable farming is produced by Tortoise Media together with Lloyds Banking Group, who are the largest lender to agriculture in the UK, with over 40,000 clients, providing significant funding to help businesses, including farms, transition to more sustainable practices. This is the second season of our ‘Making sense of…’ podcasts. The first season, Making sense of social housing, was also produced in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group.
