The Walrus launches new Canadian podcast network

Press Release · Toronto ON, Canada ·

The Canadian podcast landscape has been growing steadily but continues to have gaps—especially when it comes to networks. There’s a disconnect between independent creators and major media outlets that produce podcasts.

The Walrus is going to change that.

In spring 2027, The Walrus will launch a new podcast network designed to elevate local voices and help build a more connected podcast industry across the country.

“The old adage ‘if you build it, they will come’ does not apply to the podcasting landscape,” says Amanda Cupido, the executive podcast advisor at The Walrus. “There are so many incredible podcasts being made in Canada that people don’t know about. Our network will help ensure they’re being heard.”

The Walrus Podcast Network will include a new flagship show from the media organisation, plus a slate of carefully selected independent podcasts that align with The Walrus’s effort to spark conversation on matters vital to Canada.

According to the 2025 Canadian Podcast Listener report, 46% of Canadian adults (18+) listen to podcasts each month. Meanwhile, only 43% of that listening is spent on Canadian-produced shows. The Walrus Podcast Network aims to help push that statistic to surpass the 50% mark.

The network will not only serve audiences and creators but it will also welcome advertisers who are looking to reach local audiences. The Walrus will be selling custom-created ads for clients looking for innovative and creative approaches to reaching Canadian audiences through podcasting.

“Across the country, every industry is being called to ‘support local.’ It’s time for that sentiment to extend to podcasting,” says Cupido.

The network will be hosted on the platform Acast, and creators will enter a revenue-sharing model with The Walrus, with all profits being re-invested in fact-based journalism.

The Walrus is inviting Canadian podcast creators to consider submitting their podcast to be part of the network by Monday, November 30. Read more details here.
