TREVISO, Italy—On May 26, 2020, business executive turned storyteller YeSeul Kim released the first episode of Serendipity Stories, a narrative nonfiction podcast that spans across international lines and unpacks the long-term effects of chance encounters. Over the course of six episodes, Kim interviews six different guests from varying cultures as they reflect on these unexpected moments. Click here to listen to this recent episode, which is about former mayor Katherine Kylila Rice and how she became the first Black woman and youngest candidate elected in Geronimo, Oklahoma.

Serendipity Stories is set to release all six episodes, every other week, by August. Within a month of launch, the podcast has been downloaded 400 times and has a five-star rating on Apple Podcasts from 20 different listeners and 15+ reviews. Instagram user @wetrashtalk shared: “Wow I just listened to ‘Accidental Mayor’ - really awesome podcast and so inspiring. She’s only 25?!!!! This was a great listen during my evening walk…definitely feel good during BLM movement.”

Kim, a first generation Korean American now living in northern Italy, is a social entrepreneur who merges the science of analyzing big data, the art of qualitative research, and the application of a growth mindset to fuel her passion for solving complex social problems. “Being able to listen and go beyond titles is important,” Kim reflected on the production. “Half the work is just finding the right stories and being able to listen to them. I interviewed 40 people and boiled it down to six stories. It is a hard choice of who is good for radio and who fits the criteria for serendipity.”
