PODES 2024: best Portuguese podcasts announced

PODES, the portguese podcast festival, was back for its sixth edition on Saturday, 1 February, in Lisbon. Traditionally held in November, it was moved to February for the first time, allowing the awards to cover the full span of 2024.

The festival was hosted by Casa do Comum, a cultural space at the heart of Lisbon, in Bairro Alto, and it included talks, workshops, podcast book signings and networking moments, with the awards for best Portuguese podcasts as the climatic end of the day.

The awards process started in December, when free registrations were open for all podcasts. At the same time, open submissions were available for the people’s choice award, which ran until 15 January.

After registrations were closed, shortlists were created for each category, according to the criteria set in the regulations, and a jury of 14 members was tasked with selecting 5 nominees and 1 winner for each award. The Best Podcast was also chosen out of all the category winners.

Violeta, a limited investigative series by TSF radio, won Best Podcast. Violeta tells the tragic story of a trans woman who seeked help in Portugal to escape violence and discrimination, and how the host country did not help her.
