C13Originals and Vespucci Partner with Actress Elle Fanning to Launch One Click Documentary Podcast


C13Originals, the Peabody Award-nominated documentary studio division of leading premium podcast studio Cadence13, an Audacy company, today announced that it has partnered with critically acclaimed actress Elle Fanning, star and executive producer of Hulu’s The Great, and journalist Jessica Wapner, former science editor of Newsweek, for One Click, a new documentary podcast franchise that explores how a single click on the internet can change a life forever.

On One Click, Season One, Fanning and Wapner investigate the story of DNP (2,4-dinitrophenol), an explosive chemical originally used to make bombs in WWI that, after being banned by the FDA, has found a home on the internet as a fat-burning pill and bodybuilding supplement, and with one click, began arriving in the homes of its victims with fatal results, leaving many dead in its wake.

One Click is based on an original story by Wapner that was commissioned by Daniel Turcan and Johnny Galvin’s Vespucci, an IP incubator and production company that funds journalistic investigations from around the world.

Through the story of DNP and its victims, listeners will encounter the origins and present-day impact of body image issues as Fanning and Wapner unravel the chain of events that lead to fatal decisions. One Click features in-depth, heartbreaking interviews with family members and loved ones of the victims—including a 20-year-old woman driven to despair over weight gain caused by a medicine she was prescribed, and ultimately, to her death, because she was easily able to order DNP online. The series also follows the story of a young man who escaped bullies in his small hometown and worked hard to build up strength and confidence, only to fall victim to severe body image problems and succumb to a horrible death at the hands of DNP—as well as nurses and doctors who took care of them, and local medical examiners who tried to unravel these gruesome deaths.

More broadly, One Click is a series about the internet, where the spread of information transcends borders, instant gratification reigns supreme, and faceless communities can influence our sense of self. As we live our lives increasingly on the internet, boundaries are removed, worlds collide, and digital actions create butterfly effects that last a lifetime. Season One will feature interviews with attorneys, judges, government officials and other experts who are trying to prevent the spread of DNP, as well as interviews with people who continue to sell it. Listeners will embark on an investigation which seeks to uncover how illicit substances are sold and marketed on the open internet and why they’re so hard to stop. Together, Fanning and Jessica Wapner will zoom in on the intersection of DNP and the internet and reckon with the question of why, despite the perils, have so many turned to DNP to burn fat, and what does that say about our health as a society?

One Click, Season One will launch on May 20, 2021 with Episodes One and Two on Apple Podcasts, Audacy, Spotify and everywhere podcasts are available. New episodes will be available every Thursday.

One Click is narrated by Fanning, written and produced by Wapner. Fanning also produces with Brittany Kahan Ward for Lewellen Pictures.
