The Podcast Study 2026 reveals new revenue opportunities beyond the traditional podcast ad
Strategic Solutions Research along with Point-To-Point Marketing presented “Beyond the Pre-Roll: Revenue Opportunities Beyond Traditional Commercials” on Tuesday, examining how podcast companies can create more value from their audiences without simply adding more ad inventory.
The Podcast Study 2026 is made possible with the support of Crooked Media, NPR, and PRX. Strategic Solutions Research and Point-To-Point Marketing thank all three organizations for helping make this national research and webinar series possible.
The national study of 1,205 U.S. podcast consumers showed that traditional advertising remains important, while also revealing opportunities to expand revenue through host-read advertising, memberships, premium offerings, events, and direct audience relationships.
More than half of podcast consumers, 54.8%, said podcasts already carry too many ads, while only 8.6% said they would accept more advertising to keep podcasts free.
At the same time, 40% said a host-read ad strongly influences them to try or buy a product, compared with 26.6% for a prerecorded ad. Host endorsements also improve attention, brand recall, trust, and purchase consideration.
“The opportunity here is bigger and more exciting than simply adding more ads,” said Hal Rood, Partner/EVP of Strategic Solutions Research. “Podcast companies have a chance to make existing advertising work harder while also creating new revenue through memberships, premium offerings, events, and direct audience relationships.”
Another major focus was building the audience relationship before asking consumers to pay.
Nearly half of podcast consumers, 48.5%, said they would definitely join a free VIP Club. More than eight in ten said they would open an email from a favorite host, while 46.7% have purchased merchandise or participated in an event.
The research suggested a progression from free engagement to paid participation through VIP programs, host email, exclusive content, social media, community, and events. Interest in paid offerings was strongest below $5 per month.
Tuesday’s webinar also profiled the revenue upside with two high-value audience groups identified in The Podcast Study: Superfans and Prime Prospects. Together, they account for more than one-third of the audience.
“The distinction between these two groups is important to understanding how to grow,” said Rood. “Prime Prospects have the same level of engagement as Superfans. We want to help podcast companies understand not only how many Superfans and Prime Prospects they have, but what actions can potentially move listeners from one level of engagement to the next.”
The webinar also reinforced the connection between audience development and monetization. “It might surprise podcasters at how much more effective social media is compared to advertising within another podcast,” Rood remarked.
Social media was cited by 53.2% of podcast consumers as a source of discovery, compared with 17.4% who cited advertising within another podcast.
“For us, the next step is applying what we learned,” said Tim Bronsil, CEO of Point-To-Point Marketing. “We have much more knowledge now about how people discover content, what makes them stay, and what separates a highly engaged consumer from everyone else. We can use that intelligence to continue improving the audience development campaigns we build for our Point-To-Point Marketing clients.”
The Podcast Study 2026 webinar series will conclude October 20 with “What Radio Can Learn from Podcasting’s Trust Economy.” The free session will focus on findings relevant to radio leaders, programmers, personalities, and sellers, including trust, talent, advertising, host influence, and audience development.
