Sports Illustrated debuts its first narrative true crime podcast, Steve McNair: Fall Of A Titan

PRESS RELEASE — October 11, 2018

New York NY, US—Sports Illustrated (SI), the preeminent journalistic voice in sports and sports culture, in partnership with Cadence13, a leading podcast media company, debuts its first narrative podcast, Steve McNair: Fall of a Titan. The nine-part true crime series will be narrated by Sports Illustrated NFL writer Tim Rohan, who investigated this case for 15 months. The series debuts Wednesday, October 17 on all major podcast platforms and runs for nine weeks with new episodes every Wednesday. “Steve McNair: Fall of a Titan” is presented by Sports Illustrated and Cadence13.

The podcast examines the July 4, 2009 death of 13-year NFL quarterback Steve McNair. McNair was found slain in his Nashville condo having been shot four times. His mistress Jenni Kazemi was dead at his feet with a single gunshot wound to her head. After just four days of investigating, Nashville police announced their findings: Jenni killed Steve, and then herself. Murder-suicide.

But did everything really happen the way police say it did? In “Steve McNair: Fall of a Titan,” Rohan finds a former Nashville police officer, Vincent Hill, who’s still working the case, chasing chilling new rumors and uncovering fresh leads. Using Hill as a sort of flashlight, Rohan walks listeners through the case, with all of its intrigue - the sex, the money and the lies. He explores the question: Did Jenni Kazemi really kill Steve McNair?

Says Rohan: “The thing that appealed to me and my editors is that when we started looking at this story, we found that the matter of the Steve McNair murder was very much still alive. Not just with the friends and family of the victims, but there was even a private detective working this case, all these years later. When we began talking to people, we could tell immediately that there was a lot of emotion still surrounding the case -- pain, frustration, a real need for answers. We felt these voices would really jump out at you through a podcast, even more than on the written page.”

Chris Corcoran of Cadence13 said: “After months of research and interviews that discovered a wide range of new information, Tim has uncovered what may be a completely new set of stories surrounding what happened that fateful holiday weekend that shocked the world of sports.”

Sports Illustrated, which has always been known for its in-depth and thoughtful reporting, began its true crime franchise in print. The franchise expanded online and more recently to television with an “SI: True Crime” series from Meredith’s Four M Studios currently in production. The McNair podcast is the newest platform for the “SI: True Crime” franchise.

A trailer for the podcast can be found at SI’s comprehensive digital hub at SI.com/mcnair, which will complement “Steve McNair: Fall of a Titan.” Starting Wednesday, October 10 the hub will be updated weekly with new episodes of the series, as well as documents and media - from autopsy sketches to surveillance footage - to give listeners a full understanding of the case.

SI has a robust offering of talk-show and analysis podcasts, including the MMQB NFL Podcast, Open Floor: SI’s NBA Show, Planet Fútbol with Grant Wahl and the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast which are available on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher or wherever podcasts are available.
