Listeners can tune in to this insightful and engaging podcast conversation between Michelle Ford and Dame Prue Leith from today.
A passionate advocate for assisted dying, Dame Prue fearlessly champions the right to dignity and autonomy in end-of-life decisions, sparking crucial conversations about compassion and individual choice. She challenges societal taboos and prompts us to confront our perspectives on assisted dying - particularly pertinent as Kim Leadbeater MP submitted the Assisted Dying Bill to Parliament in October with a second reading of the bill due to be heard on Friday 29 November.
Polling in recent years has consistently shown 60-75% of the British public supports such a law.
In the Two Women Chatting episode Dame Prue reflects, “We all want to die in a dignified and in a loving way. We want to die in our own beds at home. We don’t want to schlep to foreign country, to Switzerland, to some industrial estate outside Zurich.” She added “something like 7,000 people a year die in NHS hospitals in unrelieved pain because they cannot pay for the palliative care is not yet good enough. I think it would allow thousands of people who die in hospital to die at home if they could have an assisted death.”
She further elaborated on the misconceptions surrounding assisted dying and highlighted the findings of the recent select committee of MPs, emphasising the lack of evidence for coercion and slippery slopes in jurisdictions where such measures are legal - and praised Dame Esther Rantzen for using her platform.
Discussing her new cookbook and the ethos behind it, Dame Prue Leith expressed, “Life’s Too Short To Stuff A Mushroom” encapsulates the importance of savoring life’s moments and embracing culinary experiences with flair and simplicity. Listeners can look forward to hearing more about her culinary journey and the inspiration behind this addition to her repertoire.
