Beautiful Dreamer: a New Adaptation of the Life of Stephen Foster, America’s First Professional Composer

Press Release · Akron OH, United States ·

Beautiful Dreamer is an audio drama podcast released July 4, 2026 about the life and music of America’s first professional composer, Stephen Foster. It is an immersive look into over twenty of his songs and the stories behind them and is perfect for those interested in music, history, or performing arts.

The producer, Sarah Taylor, originally wrote Beautiful Dreamer as a novel in 2019 after a local newspaper article called into question the origins of the song “My Old Kentucky Home.” Further research prompted Taylor to realize that much of Foster’s life and the background behind his songs remains unknown, and much of what people believe they know is a myth. She wrote and self-published the novel to encourage readers to learn more about Foster and to dispel some of these myths.

While researching the novel, Taylor came across several vintage plays and musicals, mostly from the 1920s and 1940s, fictionalizing Foster’s life with varying degrees of accuracy. Most of them were outdated, and she decided to adapt her novel as a play to provide an updated adaptation of his life. The script underwent several drafts and changes in format. Taylor initially envisioned the script as a screenplay or a stage play, as the last film adaptation of Foster’s life was in 1952, but she began writing the adaptation during the pandemic, which ruled out the possibility of a film or a play. Audio dramas became popular then and were more cost-effective to produce.

Taylor timed the podcast’s release with Stephen Foster’s bicentennial and America’s semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026. This made an updated look into Stephen Foster’s life even timelier.

The podcast updates weekly and will have six episodes.
