Newark NJ, USA—ABF Creative, a Newark, New Jersey-based multicultural podcast platform, is launching African Folktales, a series of diverse stories curated from the rich storytelling of the African culture. Engaging young minds, ages 3-6, each 15-minute episode highlights characters with African roots, and aid in social-emotional learning topics including building positive self-worth, respecting others; tolerance, and honesty. The collection of stories provides a resource for parents and educators looking for virtual learning tools that represent a wider range of cultures and families while schools remain closed due to COVID-19.
Anthony Fraiser, Founder and CEO of ABF Creative said, “Podcasts, like all other mediums, do not represent enough diverse characters, producers or stories. Mainstream media just started to solve for that, but with COVID-19 closing schools, podcasts and other virtual learning tools need to step up to the challenge, and quickly. Our network - and this series in particular - is meant to help bridge that gap.”
According to both the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI)1, and the American Psychological Association2, it’s important for children to see characters who not only look like themselves and their families but also sound like them. The 6 episode series was scripted and voiced by an all-Black team and executive produced by Fraiser at ABF Creative.
The series is free through https://www.abfc.co/. Companion teaching resources and downloadable print outs for each episode are available online as well. Educators and school districts interested in providing these materials to students can go to AfricanFolktale.com
