Podcast Club at BPL: Brooklyn, Past and Present

By Brooklyn Public Library

Join us for a celebration of Brooklyn… through podcasts! In the kickoff event for the new Brooklyn Public Library Podcast Club, we’ll discuss Brooklyn’s history, present, and future through podcasts.

While we’ll focus on audio podcasts, there’ll also be some articles, videos, even still images you can glance at before our gathering.

Here are the podcasts (and other media) we recommend checking out ahead of time before the discussion:

  1. Brooklyn Magazine Podcast - episode: The Brownstone Boys Have Some Renovation Tips from You

In this episode the Brownstone Boys share renovation tips and discuss their new book For the Love of Renovating: Tips, Tricks and Inspiration for Creating your Dream Home.

  1. Locals Know Best - episode: Brooklyn, NY

A tour of Brooklyn through a Brooklyn native speaking with a full time RV-er. They discuss how to make the most of a day outdoors in Brooklyn.

  1. Bowery Boys - episode: The Terrible Brooklyn Theater Fire: The Forgotten Gilded Age Tragedy

The Bowery Boys have been making podcasts about NYC for a long time. And their Brooklyn archive is extensive. But we wanted to share their most recent episode about this borough, which dives into some forgotten history and where you can go to memorialize it.

  1. Story of The Week - episode: Park Slope Panthers

A crime in Park Slope – the heart of gentrified Brooklyn – leads residents to form a neighborhood watch group. Journalist Esther Wang attended the group’s tiny first meeting, which somehow managed to showcase all the divisions roiling liberal politics.

  1. Love Thy Neighbor: Four Days in Crown Heights that Changed New York - the whole series

Thirty years ago, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, a car accident set off four days of unrest. Two people died. Dozens were injured. Hundreds were arrested. In this Pineapple Street Studios series, journalist Collier Meyerson explores what came to be known as the “Crown Heights Riot.”

  1. Barton Clarion (High School Newspaper) (June 1960) - article

  2. How the Last Ice Age Shaped Brooklyn - blog post
