- May 1: Marco Arment, the developer of Overcast, made a YouTube video about his e-ink notetaker. John Spurlock freeze-framed it when he briefly showed his Overcast to-do list. So, now we know that coming up is a rewrite of the Apple Watch app and some CarPlay work; but also a new “you might also like” feature, and a “nicer directory”.
- Apr 14: The metrics shared are aggregate metrics for each show, so are entirely privacy-aware. They’re inspired by Overcast, which shares total followers in this way (Podnews Daily has 251 followers over there); and it’s simple and easy to add. We think it’s a smart idea, though relies on podcast app developers to integrate (for no apparent benefit to them). At the very least, the standard format of JSON data could serve as a useful tool to get cross-app consumption data back to podcast creators.
- Nov 21, 2024: Popular iOS podcast app Overcast has received an update that adds listening stats and 48-hour listening history. The app has also received a price increase - Overcast Premium is up from $9.99 to $14.99 a year. (You absolutely don’t need Premium to use the app, but supporting developers is always a good idea).
- Jul 19, 2024: In the Podnews Weekly Review this week, Gordon Firemark (the Podcast Lawyer) talks about copyright, licences and fair use; and Sam and James discuss all the week's news, including the new Overcast and a music licence for podcasting in the UK.
- Jul 17, 2024: As we mentioned on Jan 11, Overcast released a new, rewritten, version of the popular podcast app. Developer Marco Arment says it’ll be easier to add new features and iterate faster. The latest episode of the Accidental Tech Podcast dives into the detail. He also adds: “Try to get used to it for like a few days before you yell at me too much, please.” (We like it).
