Gwyneth Paltrow's podcast, goop, hits number 1

The Goop Podcast was launched last week with a wide-ranging interview between host Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey; hitting #1 in the Apple Podcast charts. It was aided by Cadence13, who helped with development and distribution of the podcast. Broadcaster Entercom is the lead investor and a strategic partner in the company.

  • The NPR One app has been added to Comcast Xfinity X1 set-top boxes, bringing NPR podcasts and NPR’s personalised news radio station to the TV.

  • Digiday writes an article on how podcaster Gimlet Media is targeting Hollywood. Gimlet Pictures, its film and TV division, was formed earlier this year.

  • Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2018 research (which we covered on Mar 9) gets a lot of coverage. Steven Goldstein points out a few of his take-outs: particularly the study’s findings that listeners are enjoying more podcasts per week. Radio World highlights advice from Edison Research’s Tom Webster, not least “explain the contents, not the technology”.

  • Fast Company claims that “branded podcasts are the ads people actually want to listen to”, with a lot of data to back that assertion up. It also highlights Rise and Grind, a podcast that’s sponsored by ZipRecruiter.

  • The Times writes a piece about Irish podcasts, claiming they’re enjoying a golden age. The article’s behind a paywall here.

  • The Columbia Journalism Review covers The Trump Diaries, a podcast that will launch on March 15th.

  • A fantasy adventure novel turned into a podcast is the subject of a story in The Journal, a newspaper in Martinsburg WV, USA. Philomena: A Tale from the Cor Novan Sky Almanac is “almost like an audio book in a 3D kind of experience”, says the author, Mark Guiney; it was launched with a live event last week.

  • Press kits are a good way to get the details of your podcast out to potential sponsors. A discussion on Reddit points to three nice ones: Risky Biz, Love and Luck, and The Amelia Project.

  • Simplecast have launched Recast, a listener-driven podcast sharing and discovery tool that allows listeners to clip and share portions of podcasts.

  • A new report from Voicebot brings more data around smart speakers in the US. It reports that podcasting is used by 10% of smart speaker owners every day, 24% every month.

  • Listicle corner: the 101 Best Podcasts for 2018 was published over the weekend by The Mission.

  • An edition of The Uncertain Hour, a podcast from Marketplace, won the “best in audio for all news organizations” award, by The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW). Their opioid episode was the winner of the award; they received over a thousand entries.

  • Lots of live podcasts are coming to SXSW - MouthMedia Network has just announced an entire day of interview recordings on March 10th, and other appearances throughout the conference.
