This article is at least a year old

A romantic and autobiographical comedy to listen. How to be a Rockstar is a new audio content format in ten-chapter story about a teenager in the 90s who thought he could solve all the problems being a rockstar. It is Guga Mafra’s own story and he talks to his 15-year old son, Eric Mafra about it in the podbook. "I wanted to create something like a TV series to be listened. Something like ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘The Wonder Years’”, said the author.

Guga Mafra is the host of Gugacast, a podcast talk show - always figuring in the top 10 most listened podcasts in Brazil, with more than 70.000 downloads per episode. The podbook was produced by his audio production company Parasol Storytelling and is available exclusively at Storytel, a Swedish subscription-based audiotainment platform, present in 18 other countries, that had just arrived in Brazil.

The podbook became the most listened title in the platform locally. "It is already one of our most popular titles since the launch in Brazil. It’s a new storytelling format and the audience is so engaged”, said André Palme, Country Manager of Storytel Brazil.

“We’re getting good feedbacks from the audience. They’re binge listening to it, loving the experience. A lot of them had never listened to an audiobook before, but they were encouraged by the prefix ”pod" on the title," said Guga Mafra.

How To Be a Rockstar will be released as a regular book in 2020. Guga Mafra and Storytel are already preparing new podbooks for the next year. “The next one is non-fiction. We can also have documentaries and different forms of storytelling. There’s a lot to explore in the new format, and the users are willing to pay for that, as they pay for a book, making audio productions less dependent on advertising”.

Brazil is considered a priority marketing for most audio platforms with 120 million internet users, 40% of which have already listened to podcasts at least once (IBOPE).
