SolePower Episode 52 - Kate Shepherd, Kate Shepherd Communications

What do you do when you have an inhaled peanut allergy that affects your ability to work in an office? Or when you're hospitalized three times and the company you work for isn't happy that you actually used your health insurance? You start your own business so you can work from the comfort of your own home and still be productive.

This week's guest, Kate Shepherd, has worked in broadcasting, media relations and public relations for years, so she did what she knew best - she started her own communications agency. At first, she was scared about money and stability, but the clients started coming and many colleagues stepped up to help her out. Now she couldn't fathom going back to work for anyone else and she's doing better than ever!

For SolePower listeners only, Kate offers a free consult and 20% off your first month with her. OR 20% off your first project! That's quite a deal. Contact Kate for communications services kate@kateshepherdcommunications.com.

SolePower Episode 51- Mary Risher, MKR Photo Research, Editing & Production

SolePower Episode 51- Mary Risher, MKR Photo Research, Editing & Production

"Never work with animals or children..." - WC Fields

"Being downsized was the best thing that ever happened to me, professionally." - Mary Risher

What do polo ponies, dogs, pooping peacocks and NASCAR have in common? This week's podcast!

Our guest is photo shoot producer and editor, Mary Risher, who does everything from acquiring animals to hiring local photographers for luxury photo shoots around the world. From her corporate days to her solopreneur work, she does a bit of everything with photos - research, sourcing and creating visual stories.

Mary has been a solopreneur for 18 - count 'em - 18 years! Getting downsized from her corporate job was a tragedy, until she learned that she could go it alone and still succeed. Yay, Mary!

If you want to connect with Mary, email her at maryrisher@mac.com or 317-430-3767. She can help with photo archiving as well as her other services.

Photography has been a part of Mary's life in some way or another for more than 45 years. She had aspirations of becoming a photo journalist but realized that she enjoyed being a photo editor just as much. Her shift from working as a staff photo editor to a solopreneur came about as a result of a corporate downsizing. That was 18 years ago and she's been fortunate enough to work with an amazing roster of clients ranging from magazine and textbook publishers to commercial photo studios and advertising agencies. She loves what she does and can't imagine doing anything that provides her as much freedom and creative satisfaction.

SolePower Episode 50 - Work Life Balance

SolePower Episode 50 - Work Life Balance

Hooray! It's our 50th episode! Happy 50, SolePower!

Cheryl takes the lead on this episode of SolePower as we chat about work life balance. Ah yes, the age-old conundrum of work life balance. We’ve discovered that it’s really about harmony, not so much balance (thank you Amy Ackermann!) which makes things a lot easier.

This week, we chat about being the default parent and how that affects our time during the week, as well as getting our work organized for a more efficient work day. Feel like you’re the one doing all of the things all of the time? We get it. As solopreneurs, we take on a lot. Think about WHY you left the corporate world to do what you’re doing. What were your drivers?

We all want balance in our lives, but sometimes it’s not possible. Running our own business helps us balance our time and energy – WE get to choose what our day looks like. How about your day?

SolePower Episode 49 - Annie Sever-Dimitri, Pet Psychic Medium

SolePower Episode 49 - Annie Sever-Dimitri, Pet Psychic Medium

Going back to the woo for this episode! What fun we had with Annie Sever-Dimitri, as she shared her origin story and talked to us about picking up on animal energy as well as people energy. She's a pet psychic medium! She tunes in to people too, but we're interested in the animal talk. Having a problem with your cat peeing outside the litter box? Call Annie! Trying to connect with your beloved dog who passed 10 years ago? Call Annie!

Guest Bio: I am a professional psychic medium and animal communicator whose passion is healing animals AND their people. Providing a variety of services and a flexible approach, I partner with you and your furry family to restore physical and emotional health. I work with animals experiencing both physical and behavioral issues.  For humans, I offer psychic guidance, spirit communication (both humans and animals), intuitive coaching, reiki, and much more!

I have an M.A. in social work, and I combine my counseling skills with my psychic/intuitive abilities to create powerful, practical services that yield tangible results. I do it all with a huge dose of humor, empathy, and joy. I also explain to you what to expect from each service, and how to get the best results from our time together. For example, folks often have no idea what spirit communication is until I tell them, “It’s talking with dead people or animals!” It’s not all woo-woo; it’s “WOW! This works!”

SolePower Episode 42 - Evergreen Marketing Content

When you think of evergreen marketing content, you might think about winter or Christmas. In fact, the term evergreen is used because evergreen trees are full and green year-round. Their foliage is not dependent on seasons. The same goes for evergreen marketing content - it can be used year-round and is not dependent on trends or timely events.

We chat this week about how you can create and publish your own evergreen marketing content and repurpose it over and over. Position yourself as an expert, so that Google recognizes you as a credible source and ranks your website higher.

SolePower Episode 40 - First Quarter Goals

SolePower Episode 40 - First Quarter Goals

Have a little grace with yourself this year - no need to tackle everything in the first quarter. We put so much pressure on ourselves to "be a new me in the new year," it sets us up for failure. We're conditioned to turn over a new leaf and just SUCCEED in January. Whatever happened last year is to be forgotten!

We all know that's not how life works. First quarter is a good time to re-evaluate our goals and see if they still make sense for our business. The ability to pivot and adapt is imperative when owning a business.

Last year at this time, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had all sorts of great business plans for 1st quarter, but cancer had a different idea. A lumpectomy and radiation treatment occupied my 1st quarter in 2023 - I had to adapt. It was an interruption, but it took center stage for a few months.

When we talked to Amy Ackermann in Episode 38, the topics of adaptability and harmony were the focus of our show. We try to create balance in our lives and we wear ourselves out. If instead we adapt and create harmony, we take a lot of pressure off of ourselves that can be used for better things.

Do you hygge? What is hygge?

It's so easy to get into a funk in the winter - that's where hygge helps.

Hygge is all about being intentional with your time and community. Simplify your life and make yourself happier by exploring all that hygge has to offer - blankets, candles, conversation, and a break from all of the noise of your phone and electronics. Explore it with us on today's show!

SolePower Episode 32 - Molly Connolly, Reinventing the Arena

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." -Gloria Steinem

"You are the average of the five people you spend most time with." -Jim Rohn

We're talking about relationships on this episode of SolePower, with the amazing Molly Connolly of Reinventing the Arena. Molly works with women who are ready to find their mate, but need to do some internal work first - like figuring out who they really are and what they want in a relationship.

Molly created a very useful tool - a spreadsheet highlighting all of the things she wanted in a relationship. She then found her husband, who actually met 61 of the 63 criteria she outlined in the spreadsheet. Turns out, this method works really well! She now teaches it to other women and it works for them too!

Sign up for Molly's newsletter and receive a discount on her January workshop "Finding the Man of Your Spreadsheet Dreams." You won't regret it. We promise.

SolePower Episode 31 - Tiffany Harazinova, A Luxurious Mind

Ready to go all woo in this episode? We are too! Our special guest is Tiffany Harazinova of A Luxurious Mind. She is a multipotentialite or multi passionate entrepreneur. You don't have to pick just one thing as a woman solopreneur! Tiffany talks to us about Human Design readings, which she calls, "astrology adjacent." Readings use your birth date and time to interpret how you work, what your "why" is, and what interests might resonate with you.

Tiffany also uses a virtual assistant and she was gracious enough to talk about why she has one, how she got one, and why using a VA helps her focus on her business and how to market it.

Use the code SOLEPOWER when reserving a Human Design reading with Tiffany, to receive 20% off! NICE!

Tiffany is a multi-passionate entrepreneur who has fused her diverse professional background with her passion for personal development. As an expert in human design, she offers transformative human design readings that help others lean into their innate gifts, embrace their true nature, and unlock their potential by effectively navigating their personal and professional paths. This quarter, she will launch the "Love and Human Design Mini-Course". This course helps beginners understand how to honor the unique nature of their loved ones while also supporting their own need to live in alignment through the lens of Human Design. As someone with a passion for planners, workbooks, and all things "woo", Tiffany has channeled this energy into her blog with the goal of creating a helpful resource library for those with shared interests. When Tiffany is not working on her business, she can be found at home chilling with her husband and fur children, playing video games, indulging in documentaries, and shamelessly watching trash TV shows (e.g., "90 Day Fiance", "Married at First Sight" and "Real Housewives"). www.aluxuriousmind.com

SolePower Episode 28 - Trusting Your Intuition

Intuition. Instinct. Gut feeling. Whatever you want to call it. We all have it in some form or another but it's very often trained out of us as we become adults.

What if you really got in tune with your intuition? What if you quieted down and listened to your body? It takes practice, but I'll bet you can do it. As a woman solopreneur, it's essential to practice tuning into your gut - it can help you in your business. Use it to be more intentional about who you choose as a client. Use it to be more in touch with what your body tells you. It's all good.

In this episode, we talk about types of intuition and how to practice it for yourself. And we would love to know how you use your intuition in your business! How do you "tune in?" Let us know at SolePowerPodcast@gmail.com.

SolePower Episode 27 - The Motivation Show

SolePower Episode 27 - The Motivation Show

When we first start our businesses, we are ready to go right out of the gate. Then, somewhere along the way, we lose that motivation and it's hard to keep moving forward. As we all know, motivation comes and goes. We might be ON FIRE one day and feel like a failure the next. We might be disciplined and excited for six months straight, but lose it all when we encounter blocks or rejection. That doesn't mean that it's time to throw the baby out with the bathwater! It's just time to refocus, maybe rest, and try something a new tactic.

Remember why you started your own business in the first place? Go back to that list. Remind yourself why you're in this for the long haul. If that doesn't work, use the tips and tricks we mention in this episode!

SolePower Episode 26 - "Set That Boundary!" series (3 of 3)

Well, whaddya know, we're talking about boundaries again! They must be pretty important, right? Yes, yes, a million times yes.

In the first two episodes of the Boundaries series, we talked about what boundaries are and why they're important - in this episode we're talking about resistance. UGH! Yep, you're going to get resistance when you set boundaries with people. Be prepared for emotions. Be prepared for manipulation. Be prepared for disappointment. It's not going to be easy to set boundaries with people, but it is essential.

The great news is, you can anticipate scenarios and prepare a plan. You'll feel so much better going into difficult situations with a plan - you'll know exactly what you want to say and how to say it. AND when you practice and visualize, it won't be strange when you go into that situation or have that conversation.

Tell us how you set boundaries! We'd love to know. Email us at SolePowerPodcast@gmail.com.

SolePower Episode 25 - "Set That Boundary!" series (2 of 3)

"One of our most fundamental needs is for social connection and a feeling that we belong," says Vanessa Bohns, associate professor of organizational behavior at Cornell University. "Saying ‘no’ feels threatening to our relationships and that feeling of connectedness."

Yes, they're that important - we've made a series out of boundaries! We feel so strongly about the need to set boundaries, that we've devoted time from three shows now, talking about the importance of setting boundaries. There may be a 4th episode as well.

Creating and holding boundaries is not easy - it's a practice you must repeat consistently to get the results you want. We humans are social creatures, so when we tell people "no" or set firm boundaries, it feels weird initially. Our whole focus as a species is connection, so choosing to disconnect seems at odds with who we are. But when we set a boundary with someone, we're telling them how to best interact with us in a healthy way.

Despite all the weirdness you may feel, it's essential to tell others where we begin and they end. We'll help you get there!

Vanessa Bohns quote from "More Power to You" book by Angela Jorden.

SolePower Episode 24 - Be Curious and Take Action - Liz Geeslin, Better Lifestyle Solutions

SolePower Episode 24 - Be Curious and Take Action - Liz Geeslin, Better Lifestyle Solutions

"I work on something every day to help grow my business."

"What can I do today to move the needle?"

Two very important statements that all women solopreneurs can apply to their own lives and businesses. What a great conversation we had with Liz Geeslin! She is a powerhouse, and I mean powerhouse. Long before Liz started Better Lifestyle Solutions, she was a solopreneur. In fact, solopreneurship is all that Liz has known. After starting several businesses at age 9, she saved her first $125 to buy a horse. By age 11, she was training people in her own backyard how to ride and care for horses. By age 13, she was making 3x minimum wage. She's long-been the breadwinner in her household.

Now, at the age of 69, she's helping people eat better and feel better. We're pretty confident that Liz can do anything! So, what's her secret? What has enabled her to keep going? Two big things: Curiosity and taking action. In fact, she recommends it to every woman solopreneur - practice being curious about your business and what's next, rather than judging or worrying that you're not doing something right. AND, don't wait until you're motivated to do something. Take action and see what works best. If you wait until you're motivated to do something....it might never happen.

Liz's business, Better Lifestyle Solutions, focuses on eating well and feeling well by offering chef services and holistic solutions to clients. She's married the two services as a way to offer a full program to clients - and you'll benefit from it for sure.

SolePower Episode 23 - Thinking BIG - Andrea Liebross, Andrea Liebross Coaching

We are very excited about this episode of SolePower! Friend and colleague Andrea Liebross joins us for a chat about her new book, She Thinks Big: The Entrepreneurial Woman's Guide to Moving Past the Messy Middle and Into the Extraordinary. As Andrea's former coach, I am thrilled to see how she has just taken off! She's a force to be reckoned with - a big thinker, a coach, a speaker, and an author. I am really happy for her and the success she's seen.

Just what is thinking big? It's more than just thinking outside the box. According to Andrea, it's the ability to tap into the future you and what she wants. Often in business, we talk about the here and now and what we're experiencing. Big thinking is the future you thinking. Makes sense, right?

We immediately signed up for Andrea's book launch goodies. We hope you will too!

SolePower Episode 22 - "Set That Boundary!" series (1 of 3)

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run." -Kenny Rogers "The Gambler"

It's the first in the Boundaries series, y'all! In this episode, Cheryl and I start beating the drum - setting boundaries is essential to your personal and professional life. I know, I know...when you read about boundaries, you might feel the need to shrink from the topic. But we invite you to think about boundaries in a different way. Yes, you should set them and no, it's not always fun to do so. But boundaries aren't just a way to keep people OUT, they're a way to tell other people how they should interact with you. Much like building a fence in your backyard, you're telling people that this is your space and you can invite them to come into your backyard, but there are rules.

The best way to identify what boundaries are important to you, figure out what your top 3 values are. Knowing what's most important to you will inform your boundary setting. Check out Cheryl's blog post about core values!

SolePower Episode 21 - Forces at Work - Missy Shopshire, Missy Shopshire Coaching

Before you read, join Missy's Launch Team on www.missyshopshire.com today to get your 99c copy of her book online on Tuesday, September 5!
We've been looking forward to this episode for a while! Our friend Missy Shopshire spent a year writing her new book, Forces At Work: How to Get What You Want and Keep What You Value - and we're excited to chat about it with her! We knew it would publish in September, so we wanted to get her on the podcast to promote the book right about now.
Missy's book Forces At Work is all about being honest with yourself about your purpose, power and vision - knowing when to slow down and right yourself before speeding forward again. The stories that Missy shared with us were so cool that we actually forgot for a second that we were in an interview and we just found ourselves listening to her talk. That's how good an interview it was for us!
We all have stories about what prompted us to go solo and start our own businesses - Missy's story begins with two physical illnesses (her own and her daughter's) and how they made her look at her life and business differently. She realized that she was not living in alignment with who she really was and decided to become a coach, author and speaker. She's helped hundreds of people realign themselves by empowering them to step into their power and create a compelling vision.
BIO
Missy began her career in sales, reaching the top 2% in a multi-billion dollar cosmetic company. She held that position for over ten years and learned the importance of building a team, leading them well, and working toward a shared version of success. Then, two life threatening events changed everything. Her 4 year old daughter fought and won a battle with stage 3 kidney cancer, and shortly after, Missy herself experienced a rare infection that left her in a coma fighting for her life. As she recovered, Missy started making big changes in her life and career. Leaving the sales industry at the top of her game, she switched gears to become an author, speaker, and coach. Her book Forces at Work helps leaders do what she learned to do - align with a higher purpose and achieve their true potential.

SolePower Episode 20 - Branding & Design 101 - Teri Capron, Fresh Design

"Print is not dead!" - Teri Capron

In this week's episode, we chat with everyone's favorite graphic designer, Teri Capron, of Fresh Design. I tend to geek out on branding, marketing and design, so I was super excited for us to interview Teri. As a writer and editor with many friends who have left newspapers, I'm thrilled to hear that print is still alive and well - even if a lot of it is advertising.

Teri talks to us about what branding truly is and what your logo says about you. In this day and age of $5 designs online, it's important for women solopreneurs to know that sometimes you get what you pay for. Everyone fancies themselves a designer, but do they have years of experience in both print and digital formats? When you brand, you're not just looking for a quick logo and design, you're looking for something that is available in many formats and has staying power.

Teri brought us solid resources too - Killer Visual Strategies: Engage Any Audience, Improve Comprehension, and Get Amazing Results Using Visual Communication, by Amy Balliett, and PageProof software, for marketing teams.

As a graduate of Herron School of Art, Teri's roots are in publishing and design. As a long-time designer for a magazine, she earned her chops before deciding to go out on her own. She's got the experience and ingenuity to help clients create striking visuals. We think you'll love her work.

SolePower Episode 17 - Identifying and Managing Burnout

SolePower Episode 17 - Identifying and Managing Burnout

Reverend Jim Ignatowski: Yeah, I did some drugs, though probably not as many as you think. How many drugs do you think I did? Elaine Nardo: A lot. Reverend Jim Ignatowski: Wow! Right on the nose! Some of us are old enough to remember two definitions of "burnout." When I was little, a burnout was someone who did a few too many drugs in the '60s, resulting in cognitive and mental challenges in the '70s. They were a bit spacey and silly. Reverend Jim Ignatowski from the TV show Taxi was a classic example. A little throw back for those of you who are 50+! In 2023, burnout has another definition - a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity. How many times have you felt worn out, tired and frazzled on the job or in your business? More times that you can count, I'm sure. We've been there. Cheryl and I have lots of burnout stories, but we'd rather share something valuable with you. Learn how to identify burnout and what you can do to stave it off. It's really all about self care and knowing when you need it.

SolePower Episode 16 - Selfies Are Not Headshots - Lori Cardwell, Lori Cardwell Photography

Not even a house of bees could keep Lori Cardwell from interviewing with us. While Cheryl and I would've thrown in the towel and rescheduled for another day, Lori merely called the bee guy, who got rid of her problem right away so she could meet with us. Talk about commitment!

Lori's story begins in the corporate world, where many of our stories begin. After incorporating photography into every job, she fell in love with it. She decided she could venture out on her own and do her own thing. And she does it well. Lori's job is to make people of all shapes and sizes love and appreciate their bodies and images. She goes out of her way to help clients put their best face forward, making clients feel comfortable and confident during the process. And she's a wealth of knowledge about how to pose and which colors are best for you. She even taught us a thing or two about posing on the red carpet - secret tips from the stars! Read her blog post on her website and learn to sashay just like celebrities.

Everyone we know has had their head shots taken by Lori - and they're thrilled with her work. Check out our head shots on SolePowerPodcast.com for proof of Lori's talent. The best bit of advice we share during this episode? DO NOT USE A SELFIE AS A HEAD SHOT! Honestly. Pay for this service. Don't get a friend to take your picture against your dining room wall. Trust us on this. Getting amazing head shots is a big gift to yourself and to your clients.

Lori Cardwell Photography is a full-service portrait photographer based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their mission is for everyone of all ages, shapes, and sizes to have a great experience during their photo session and walk away with photographs they look and feel amazing in. SolePower Episode 15 - The Brassy Broad - Jen Edds

SolePower Episode 15 - The Brassy Broad - Jen Edds

"I can figure this out. I am resourceful. I am a Gen Xer." - Jen Edds

We went all out fan girl on this episode of SolePower! Jen Edds has been on our list for a while - we tried not to overwhelm her with total geekery. Podcaster, keynote speaker, songwriter, Gen Xer and all-round awesome chick - Jen is a powerful woman. While her background is in music, an opportunity presented itself a few years ago - editing a podcast for nuns. What? Yes, nuns. She enjoyed listening to the podcast and wanted to learn more about editing. She figured it out (because she's a bad ass) and moved into podcasting herself. Dubbing herself the "head broad in charge," Jen developed several podcasts of her own - the UkuDaily Dispatch, Beauty and the GI, and The Brassy Broadcast. She helps clients navigate through the podcast world as they develop their own style and message. She gave us a few tips and we are eternally grateful!

Jen also uses her musical talent to create songs for clients. These aren't typical songs - they're stories told through song instead of PowerPoint slides. Who wouldn't prefer songs to a boring slide show? We loved her song for Pride month in June. And her songs about co-workers. Well, you just need to hear them all. Do yourself a favor and listen to her songs for an hour. You'll feel better about everything in your life.

Whether it's moving furniture to a better place, donating items to a charity, or creating your own sacred space - you deserve to choose the energy in the room. The best part about working with Stephanie - NO JUDGMENT! She understands that our brains all work differently and it's o.k. if you have clutter - it's about what works for you.

That's Imposter Syndrome telling you that you're not good enough in some way. The good news is...it's all lies! SolePower Episode 12 - The Real Deal on DEI - Amy Waninger, Lead At Any Level

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is not just a box that you check mark - it's imperative as solopreneurs that we embrace what it actually means. When our networks have breadth as well as depth, we flourish as a business. Our guest this week is the amazing Amy Waninger, with Lead At Any Level and A Page Beyond, a friend and colleague whose work just amazes us every day. Amy explains the science behind being with people who look just like us - it's bigger than societal influence - as humans we're programmed to identify with a group like our own. As business owners, we have to be intentional about who is in our network and deliberately choose diversity. DEI is not just the hot button of the moment - it's the way of the world. Cheryl and I are riveted in this interview with Amy, as she explains the current labor crisis, the future of the workplace, and how being a solopreneur gives us power and self awareness. We also talk about writing books and getting your name out there as an expert. Not surprisingly, Amy started her own self publishing company as a way to get her words in print without paying a fortune to a publishing house and agent. You will love this episode and listen to it over and over! It's chock-full of wisdom and knowledge.

The best way to reach Amy is via email at amy@leadatanylevel.com or on LinkedIN, Amy C. Waninger. We can't say enough about Amy and her brilliance.

SolePower Episode 11 - Ditching the Corporate Mindset

The majority of solo entrepreneurs once worked in corporate America, so it's no wonder we carry some of those traits into our own business. You started your own business for a reason - and we're betting that flexibility and freedom were part of that decision. So don't marry yourself to 8 - 5 every week day and 2 weeks of vacation! As a solo entrepreneur, you call your own shots. You make your own schedule. You express yourself in your own way. You determine what works for you and what doesn't. It's all about living the dream you wanted when you left the corporate world and making it your own. In this episode, we chat about ways to make your business work for you - whether it's setting a schedule, choosing what to wear, or taking care of yourself. It's all important!

SolePower Episode 6 - Death Proof Your Business - Sarah Kendrick, RHEA Services

Have you ever thought about what would happen to your business if something happened to you? Tune in!

This week on the SolePower podcast...we interview Sarah Kendrick of RHEA Services - a woman solopreneur who saw the need for her services and created them herself. As we all know, necessity is the mother of invention!

Sarah started her career as a music therapist, working with children and adults with developmental disabilities. While helping her family after the death of her grandma, Sarah realized the need for care and support for those in the bereavement process. Using the skills she developed during her years as a therapist - organization, time management, passion and support, she found a way to help others as they walk through life’s difficult transitions.

Now Sarah is using her attention to detail, empathy, and care to simplify the pre-planning and estate closure processes for clients from all walks of life.

Residing in Indianapolis with her husband, Kevin, and her two dogs, Milo and Hazel, Sarah enjoys gardening, making music, and spending time with her (large) extended family. On any given day she can be found among her day lilies or corralling her fur-babies, while quietly singing and planning the next family adventure. Want to pre-plan with Sarah?
