Uneven, But Fun

Some episodes don’t download / play, but they work on the dedicated BBC Sounds app … Let’s hope they leave this one available like a podcast should be. The first few episodes don’t match the rest stylistically. Both styles are fun, but the shift is disorienting. Acting and sound are typically amazing per usual BBC productions. I trust it’s a fair addition to the Dr Who universe. Very good set of characters to make it feel more realistic and relatable.

Fresh ideas, unusual plot maneuvering, excellent characterizations. Ambitious to boot!

So Meta, So Queer, Yet Still So Very Who

I've bern watching Doctor Who since Jodie Whittaker was in nappies — which was, incidentally, the last time the show had two regular female leads in the TARDIS, Nyssa and Tegan, so I hope we don't have to wait another 35 years for that to happen again— and I was charmed by how this scrappy podcast managed to tell a traditional Doctor Who story via a novel, 21st century format with not-so-traditional characters. I liked how it starts out as an in-universe podcast exploring rumors of the Doctor, but gradually the podcasters get drawn into just the kind of paranormal story they've only half believed. There's some nice meta on storytelling, and on the role or value of the unnamed extras and side characters TV Who doesn't have time for. A few recurring side characters from Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane adventures put in cameos, but you don't need to know who they are to follow the story. And yes, for fans who felt cheated by Jodie's covid-shortened final season, there's a few more precious moments with the Thirteenth Doctor, to remind us why *she is loved.* Also? TO CAST AND CREW: I was marching for our rights in the 90s when it was dangerous, and in many US states a crime to be out, when I could've been disowned, when it seemed like everyone at my nerdy women's college wanted to be Ace or date Ace or both — so from the bottom of my heart, I just want to say, thank you. Like I said, I've been watching Doctor Who since 83. I introduced my first girlfriend to Doctor Who in 1990. And though she's married another woman, we're still Family, and I sent them this podcast. It's lovely after all these many years to encounter Who through the eyes of characters like the young people we were in those days — or perhaps through the eyes of kids we would've been proud to foster. Would it be rude to say I'm proud of you? Because I am. This story is a precious gift to some of us, just as Jodie's whole era has been. AND ELLA WATTS SHOULD PRODUCE SEASON TWO. Taking a story so meaningful to trans and/or queer women fans away from the trans woman who made it and giving it to a cis man — yes, I know James' bona fides; this is TrakenTourist, longtime reviewer of Big Finish audios -- was a mistake. Doctor Who has survived by changing with the times and reinventing itself— regenerating. Not by calcifying.

Voice actors were so talented! Story felt like it could have been a little tighter but still really easy listening
Some of the best Doctor Who there is!

Great characters—so real, so vividly realized. Such a rich exploration of character and relationships and emotion—they break your heart open. Great drama, real scares and creepy stuff and real joy and playfulness. It’s simply some of the best Doctor Who there is.
Broken Episode

This series is great overall, but episode 6 appears to be broken. Please fix it.
